About Helen Curtis

I believe in a holistic approach to family support, mental health and well-being and having worked with children and families for over 10 years in varying roles, my knowledge and understanding of people receiving the right help at the right time fuels my dedication to the workforce.Using my skills in communication, motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy, I support people in being able to change their behaviours, improve their outcomes and develop their own skills and strategies. My expertise began with early years which extended into parenting and family support for all ages. From this fulfilling step in my vocation, I began to develop a keen interest in the brain development, mental health and well-being of children and young people including trauma and its impact on social, emotional and health outcomes. Throughout my career, education and learning has been the foundation on which my research has been linked to and influences on most severely.I have a passion for psychology, trauma recovery and learning through compassion and curiosity. My commitment to professional development has seen me reach Champion status allowing me to impart this knowledge through the delivery of staff training. During my career, I have been involved with the evolution of services and supported staff through various changes within the workplace. I have successfully implemented new group work and modern approaches to everyday practices. With a sharp mind, I enjoy puzzles, games and problem solving. I align with spirituality and so enjoy yoga, mindfulness and nature walks. When I am not walking the dog or playing with the children, I’ll usually be taking a photo, singing a song or reading a book.

  • Barnardo'S
    Project Worker
    Barnardo'S Jan 2014 - Jul 2014
    Calne, England
This was a temporary contract covering the maternity leave of another employee. My main responsibility during this role was to support parents, children and the family unit on an ADHOC or referral basis. I was to deliver advice and signpost to other services that will provide the best outcomes for the children and creating a preventative intervention to more intensive services such as social care. Community outreach was an important part of engaging the families with the children's centre. I had the idea of setting up a regular meeting in the local coffee shop where many of the families requiring support were already socialising. This created an opportunity to support families in environment that was neutral and felt safe, therefore creating a stronger link and continued connection to the families and their networks.Part of the role was to organise, manage and run the play groups and actvities that the centre held for families. These included baby massage, behaviour management, stay and play sessions, support sessions, sensory experience, day trips, fundraising events.
  • Childbase Partnership Ltd
    Nursery Practitioner

    Swindon, England
My role was based within large nursery in Swindon. I predominately worked with the under 2’s but would cover in any of the five rooms with ages ranging from 0-5 years. I thoroughly enjoyed this role with the different challenges that each day brought. I was working full time within the nursery before going on maternity leave in October 2011 - July 2012 when I returned on a part time basis working 24 hours (over 3 days) per week. The main responsibility in my role is providing outstanding care for children and helping them to develop and learn through fun and safe play using the EYFS guidelines. On a daily basis I assisted my team in nappy changing, meal preparation, bottle feeding, soothing children to sleep and implementing interesting activities for the children to engage in. I was also heavily involved with the planning and organising of weekly and long term activities. During my time in the baby room, I came up with the idea of a coffee morning that I planned and ran every week for the parents to become more involved with the nursery life. Safeguarding children is of paramount importance to me and I implemented new policies within the nursery following discussions with my senior colleagues and management team. During my time with the nursery I studied and completed my Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.
