I am a Lecturer in Healthy Urban Landscapes and School for Public Health Research Transdisciplinary Fellow at the University of Sheffield, and member of the Irish Climate Change Adaptation Committee. My research in Landscape Architecture provides me with the tools to understand how people interact with and benefit from urban nature, informing policy and practice to prioritise human well-being, biodiversity and sustainability in the context of a changing climate.

Senior Lecturer In Healthy Built EnvironmentsUniversity Of The West Of England May 2017 - Dec 2022BristolI'm currently "Futureproofing Luton", co-producing an educational arboretum-meadow demonstrating the benefits of trees and meadows for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation and human well-being. I'm working with the Landscape Institute and local stakeholders including Riverbank Primary School and Luton Parks Service. Industry partners include Pictorial Meadows Sheffield and Marshalls PLC. Previous research focuses on public response to designed urban planting and green infrastructure, at scales varying from direct human experience of planting to the wider landscape scale. My interests lie at the interface between human aesthetic response, well-being and biodiversity in the context of a changing climate. Previous experience:MA research (2010-11) with James Hitchmough on the management recommendations for the London 2012 perennial meadows: The use of cutting and irrigation to delay the flowering of native wildflower meadows.Doctoral research focused on Human aesthetic response, well-being and perceptions of biodiversity in relation to designed urban planting in a warming climate (2011-15). Funded by a University of Sheffield Social Sciences Faculty Scholarship.RA Urban BESS project - part of a bigger 7-year national research programme, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Sustainability, (BESS), funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council. (December 2012-17) Worked in the key bridging role between the academic team and local authority partners in Luton and Bedford, collaborating closely with the latter to establish the meadows experiment and manage it through diverse challenges to a successful conclusion. Luton 'minigolf meadows' project: A collaboration developing from Urban BESS project, supported Pictorial Meadows. A former mini-golf site in Wardown Park, Luton was transformed into an area of vibrant urban meadows. The project was awarded, 'Highly Commended' in the annual Luton and Bedfordshire Community Awards, (October 2015). -
