ALEF, Adult Learning and Empowerment Fund, is a non profit association founded in May 2010 based in Sweden. Our vision is to make it possible for youth and adults in the world's poorest regions to change their own lives by aquiring literacy and numeracy in their mother tongue. ALEF has a unique method for mother tongue literacy and numeracy for adults living in poverty. The method is based on participatory discussion, texts created by the learners, and aims at assisting learners to gain a deeper understanding of their living conditions and how they can act together to bring about change. Our strategy is to build capacity in local organisations already working among the people, familiar with the language, culture and socio-economic conditions of their area. We assist in the producion of teaching materials and course manuals in the mother tongue based on a careful analysis of the life situation of the target group and the language. We also provide training in the method and approach for key personnel, training of trainers, course and curriculum planning, monitoring and evaluation.Currently, ALEF has partner organisations in Benin, Uganda and DR Congo. We are looking for new partnerships, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. We plan a tour of several countries in November 2018 and January 2019 to form partnerships.
