About Helen Brooks
I am an experienced University and Arts senior leader with expertise in research, knowledge exchange and innovation. I am currently Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Previously I was interim Director of the Graduate School, Northeastern London (2023) and Director of Research & Innovation, Division of Arts & Humanities (2020-2024) where I had expertise in leading 8 disciplines (UoAs); leading REF strategy and planning; developing research culture transition; and advancing impact, innovation and commercialisation. I am Professor of Cultural History & Creative Practice with research expertise in multimedia performance; histories of theatre, society & culture; gender, sexuality and identity; and co-production & participatory research. As a creative practitioner and researcher I am passionate about storytelling and creative engagement with diverse and marginalised heritage and histories. My work moves between performance, digital art and cultural histories, and I work closely with industry partners and community contexts, often co-designing and co-delivering projects. I have appeared on podcasts, radio and television. Collaborative projects include the Great War Theatre project (AHRC), Beyond the Binary: Performing Gender Then and Now (AHRC), Staging Centenaries (AHRC), and Gateways to the First World War (AHRC). I am co-founder & creative director of the Gateways Partnership. The Gateways Partnership works with cultural, creative and community partners to bring arts and history together. Recent work includes 'Walking with Ghosts' in partnership with Imperial War Museums as part of their 14-18 NOW Legacy of War fund. Forthcoming work includes 'De Weg Terug' (The Way Back) with Passchendaele Memorial Museum, and is showing in May 2024.
