I began at Tiso working on the presentation of online products for their Alpine Bikes and Blues Ski departments, and creating video and written content across the fascias of the business. As the team grew, I moved my skills over to their George Fisher fascia after a website relaunch. Before I left to change career path, I initiated the Tiso Overland 500 bikepacking route (designed by Andy Cox) which joins the Tiso stores using gravel paths, byways, core paths and bike paths for a sustainable adventure across Scotland. I also led a team to research, design and launch Tiso’s Think Green product sustainability strategy which is present online and in stores.

FINDRA is a relatively small company so my scope of work is extremely broad where I manage multiple roles. I plan, execute and monitor all of the social media campaigns and general postings. I draft all of the marketing and company copy for blogs, social media posts and direct marketing. I work closely with the CEO to align the general marketing campaigns with our online presence, I work with others on external marketing opportunities and assist in maintaining the company website. The company attends and hosts events at multiple adventure festivals and I manage the admin related to this, work closely with our brand ambassadors and any further ad hoc duties which need completing. I’m based and work solo in the Edinburgh boutique shop and visit the main office in the Scottish Borders once a week for meetings with the rest of the team.

I worked in a similar role as I had in Unilabs London (please see below), though in a smaller team with additional responsibilities. I moved from London after Unilabs won a large contract and took over a laboratory in a private Glaswegian hospital, for which they needed an experienced member of staff. I migrated the laboratory’s technical processes over to the Unilabs standard, trained the existing staff in procedures and IT systems, and put in place standard operating procedures (SOPs). I replaced the lab’s existing SOPs with new procedures, which I drafted to conform with the Unilabs’ standard. I supervised transition of the lab to those SOPs in an organised process which allowed (1) the new lab to smoothly transition to Unilabs way of doing things; (2) allowed the lab to carry on its existing work providing services to the hospital; (3) migrate the lab to its new function within the UK Unilabs network, whereas previously it was a single hospital only processing lab. On an on-going basis I was solely responsible for ensuring the lab operated efficiently, that all processes were adhered to, maintained the labs specimen records and database, and coordinated all specimen transfers among our Scottish hospital clients and our London and Glasgow Labs.

My principal duties as a medical laboratory assistant (in both London and Glasgow) in Unilabs’ principal UK Laboratory involved maintaining laboratory’s specimen database and archives, assigning pathologists workloads, assisting pathologists with dissection, and maintaining processing machines with the correct reagents. Specific to the London laboratory, due to his long-term illness, I volunteered to do additional shifts commencing at 6am-10am before working until 6pm in my normal role. In time I became very trusted by the hospital consultants and biomedical scientists in the laboratory, and the UK operations director, and was ultimately offered the role in Glasgow.

UCL owns the Bloomsbury Theatre, and for a few years of each term, students are lucky enough to develop and perform shows at the venue. Whilst being a very active member of the UCLU Stage Crew Society from my first year at UCL, I was offered casual work for non-student shows which continued throughout both of my degrees and subsequent years after leaving University. I was lucky enough to be anything from a stage hand during professional ballet performances and a Derren Brown technical rehearsal, to a follow-spot operative for Ricky Gervais, or a sound & light board operative for a host of other comedy shows. I genuinely miss my time at The Bloomsbury and think back on it so fondly.
