About Helen Mccarthy
I'm a writer, speaker, editor, designer and curator with 13 published books and translations into 7 languages. I've been researching anime since 1981 and wrote the first book in English on anime, published in 1993.I've also written many articles, edited two magazines (one of which I co-founded,) consulted for projects successful and otherwise, spoken at universitites, libraries, festivals and schools on three continents, appeared on film and been instrumental in the spread of anime and manga in the United Kingdom. Post-COVID I'm still writing, but prefer to speak in controlled conditions. I love the inclusivity and accessibility of events held online, especially if they're recorded and made available to those on different timelines. I'm happy working virtually over any link you care to open.I still work face-to-face, but only where the safety of my audience, as well as myself, is taken care of. I'd be interested in exploring work in situations such as cruise ships, where there is STILL no regular lecture on anime, manga, games and Japanese culture on offer on ANY cruise line. It's not just Japan: France, Italy, China and many other places have vibrant, exciting anime, manga, cosplay and local comics cultures. Tour companies are missing out on a major source of fun and enrichment for their passengers by ignoring this.Still excited by scholarship, ideas, books, places, creativity, and the wonderful way our history builds on the work done by those who went before us. Still passionate to see all that work acknowledged.
Listed skills include Publishing, Books, Editing, Writing, and 45 others.

Feature Writer And Reviewer

I also design workshops and courses based on over 20 years of training and coaching experience in the public and private sector, helping organisations to.
Editor
I edit books and other projects on a freelance basis, working with both large publishers and small presses. Founding ANIME UK magazine with Peter Goll of Sigma Publishing, Steve Kyte and Wil Overton, gave me a crash course in guerilla editing.
