Starting in 1981 when there were no books on anime and manga in English, I've helped to research its history and build awareness of its potential. Through 13 books in 8 languages, two magazines and countless articles, plus lectures, talks and presentations on three continents and online, I'm one of the people responsible for its current profile outside.

I write reviews, interviews and features for all kinds of publications. My past work ranges from Super Play magazine to the late lamented Death Ray, by way of NEO, Islands, Kyoto Journal and the Daily Telegraph.

I present talks and workshops on anime, manga and live-action film for all kinds of audiences in Asia, the USA and Europe. I've appeared at events ranging from large public festivals, such as ANIMANI 96 in Copenhagen, to educationally-accredited events, including SCHOOL GIRLS AND MOBILE SUITS in Minneapolis. I design and chart cross stitch projects. My first embroidery book, 'Manga Cross-Stitch', was published in 2009 by Ilex Press in the UK and Andrews McMeel in the USA.

I make unique workshops based around hands-on interactive projects that develop real skills. User feedback indicates that these are workshops that deliver! They are intended for children aged 4-18. I also design workshops and courses based on over 20 years of training and coaching experience in the public and private sector, helping organisations to.

I edit books and other projects on a freelance basis, working with both large publishers and small presses. Founding ANIME UK magazine with Peter Goll of Sigma Publishing, Steve Kyte and Wil Overton, gave me a crash course in guerilla editing. I later edited Manga Max for Titan, and it seemed a pity to let the experience go to waste.

Stone Bridge Press published 'Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation' in 1999, and 'The Anime Encyclopedia', the pre-eminent reference work in its field, in 2001. It was updated in 2006 and again in 2011.

I was honoured to be invited to join the Committee as a founding member and give the keynote address at the first FANS conference in May 2013. FANS has championed and encouraged my work on the history of cosplay over the past decade.

I was honoured to be asked to work on this exhibition. As well as making small contributions to the preparation, I gave two related talks and joined one expert panel as part of the varied programme of activities connected to the exhibition.

I first worked with the Barbican team presenting films for schools audiences from elementary school upwards. Since January 2007 I have curated and presented monthly lectures and screenings for adults at the Barbican Cinema, placing Japanese animation in the context of world visual culture. I lectured and delivered comic workshops at the Museum in connection with their manga event Professor Munakata's Manga Adventure in 2009/10. It was wonderful to be associated with the Museum again, for the first time since leaving the British Library in 1979.
