John Hendrickse is a Head of Primary Technology & Innovation & Whole School Robotics at Victoria Shanghai Academy. Colleagues describe him as "John was my ICT Educational Specialist at DSC International for several years. He became a mentor to me because of his strong understanding of technology and how to apply it in elementary education. He always had a fun way of sparking curiosity and enhancing teaching and learning for teachers and students! John’s lessons had my students laughing, collaborating, and learning the value of teamwork. John is also an excellent communicator and can explain technical concepts clearly to teachers and students. During professional development opportunities, we worked closely together on developing new units for Genius Hour, STEAM, and Coding. John works very well with others. He builds strong relationships with teachers, students, and his school community. He is patient, kind, and open-minded to new teaching and learning experiences! John embodies the qualities of being a lifelong learner and stays up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in educational technology. He presents and attends conferences and participates in professional development opportunities to expand his knowledge and skills. He is active on social media and openly shares his ideas and passion for education with the wider online community. He uses a whole-child approach to this, and it is exemplified in the way he builds long-term, design thinking projects for his students to engage with. And example of this is his Mission to Mars initiative, in which he built a full unit around students designing, building and testing VEX robots that would be able to navigate the difficult terrain on Mars. I worked with John as my partner for 3 years at DSC International School (Delia School of Canada). In that time, John and I collaborated with teaching and support staff to design the Innovation Hub - a series of learning spaces including a Makerspace, a Robotics Centre, a Multimedia/VR room and even a Culinary Arts Centre. John helped bring outdoor education to the school by starting an indoor/outdoor gardening initiative in which student yields were donated to those in need. John is also a dedicated community volunteer. His dedication to the Project Spark HK program, in which tutoring is provided for refugees and asylum seekers who are new to the Hong Kong school system, led me to join him in the organization - something that is important to me to this day. John is an incredibly intelligent, compassionate and resilient educator who is a pleasure to work with and I hope to be able to work with him again in some capacity in the future!"
