I presently use Geographic Information Science (GIS) skills to analyze changes in the Georgia tidal salt marsh. I have been evaluating marsh “health” from remote sensing imagery and implementing statistical analysis and GIS tools to map shoreline changes and locate zones in the marsh that demonstrate signs of vegetation loss. The tidal salt marsh acts as a buffer to the upland ecosystem. Historically, marsh stability depends on the interplay between sediment accretion, erosion, land elevation, vegetative coverage, and sea level. These processes, especially sea level changes cause lateral and vertical displacements of the marsh. However there is growing worry that the increasing rate of sea level rise coupled with anthropogenic factors will reduce the amount of vegetated area of the marsh significantly.I am excited to contribute to the research in the Kostka lab group at Georgia Tech and the broader effort to establish sustainability and resiliency measures for marsh restoration. The environment and the climate are an endless source of fascination. I truly enjoy mapping and combining geographical interests with quantitative analyses that reveal natural interplay and strengthen arguments quantifying affects of industrialization.
