Henry Samuels is an active double bass player and teacher in the Cleveland area. He has performed with orchestras in the most prominent concert halls across the US, Europe, Japan, and China. Henry began his music studies on piano at age 6. He soon after took up the trombone and double bass in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. It was not long before bass became his primary passion. He soon went on to receive a double bass performance degrees from Boston University and then from Cleveland Institute of Music. As a Cleveland resident, he performs regularly with the Akron Symphony. As a member of the Akron Symphony bass section, Henry has performed Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Brahms 2nd Symphony, and the Bruch Violin Concerto with violinist Joshua Bell on the Bruch violin concerto. He also performs with the Bluewater Chamber Orchestra, the Youngstown Symphony, and the Cleveland Choral Arts Society.Henry also performs as the solo double bass player with Stars in the Classics: a Cleveland concert series that features recently graduated musicians performing chamber and solo works. He recently performed on their WCLV 104.9 ideastream program performing Gliere’s Intermezzo and Tarantella with pianist Amy Tan. He has been exploring a passion for klezmer music through workshops and performances in the Cleveland area. He recently participated in a klezmer workshop with violinist Steven Greenman focusing on a mix of religious works and wedding music from the 19th century. Henry has performed klezmer concerts at the Maltz Performing Arts Center, and the Euclid Tavern.Henry also enjoys adapting popular cello and violin repertoire for the double bass. He runs and operates contrabasssheetmusic.com: a website that sells difficult to find transcriptions for the double bass. Henry is currently the double bass and music theory instructor at the music schools in Avon and Strongsville.
