About Herman Wu
Greetings,Welcome to my linkedin profile where you will find a summary of who I am as a professional and my personal values to complement my attached resume of experiences and accomplishments. I figured you would want to know a real person instead of a typical strategic, operational, planning machine.Professionally, my job is to lead, empower, and encourage a collaborative environment for teams to accomplish complex tasks. I believe leadership involves mentorship, patience, understanding, and a lot of humility. As a leader, sustaining a collaborative environment is the ultimate goal since decision-making as a collective yields better estimates, flow, and results.Passions I have include learning about process improvements, human behavior, and finding a greater purpose. My professional passions led me to the world of Scrum, Lean Six Sigma, and project management as a great way of learning how work can be fun, productive, and purposeful. Experiences I have in the Army were extremely valuable and taught me a lot about leadership and more importantly the values of character. A great leader must have character with morality and ethics to inspire, persist, and maintain focus when faced with adversity.

Operations Officer / Apms
Program Manager
Program Manager And Community Outreach
As a Program Manager within an organization of 4,000 people and multiple subordinate units, there were ample opportunities to exercise in stakeholder management, trade offs, scope management, KPI development, schedule management, and human resource allocation. Many of these challenges we faced were overcome through improved communications by conducting in progress reviews (IPRs)/Sprint reviews, calendar synchronizations/daily standups, expectation management, and exercise care framing problems to improve focus and prevent scope creep. As the Community Outreach Manager, I integrated families into the unit, improved volunteerism, and ensure new families were incorporated into the community. This additional duty position was one that was outside my comfort zone and core competency as my expereinces revolved primarily around other Soldiers and federal employees. I overcame this obstacle by consistently refining the scope of my projects, and working closely with our public affairs office to improve communication channels. Projects I led to integrate families included a newcomer's brief to introduce the organization's culture, establishing community support groups, improving community communications, and building self sustaining communities by consolidating information on resources available to them that is easily accessible. Overall, our community outreach program became more robust, dynamic, and inclusive; allowing our Soldiers to focus on their deployment requirements. Before I forget, this was the time I realized I had a slight fear of heights but still jumped out of perfectly good airplanes with a little parachute at 1000 feet every two to three months.
General Manager
My formal title in the Army was Company Commander, but the functions and responsibilities of that position is most reflective of a General manager. During that time, my role was primarily administrative, and ensuring daily operations were conducted to account for personnel and actions. Occasionally, my role turned into crisis management during contingency operation exercises. As the General manager my administrative roles was to ensure the staff at large was in accordance with Army regulations by providing ample opportunities for them to complete those general tasks with little to no hindrance upon their assigned tasks. I was able to do this by improving communications within my staff directorates and understanding their operational tempo needs. Finally, personnel issues of pay, vacation time, and administrative actions were handled promptly to reduce personnel angst and ensure trust within my unit.
Protocol Officer
This position was by far one of the best opportunities of my Army career. Officially the job was titled Distinguished Visitor (DV) Escort officer or DV operations officer, responsible for organizing the itinerary and plans for General officer, congressional delegations, and foreign dignitaries on behalf of US Army Europe. It was during this time that I had the greatest opportunity to have a peak into the world of the important and the insights of their concerns. Through this experience I embraced the importance of customer satisfaction, customs, courtesies, and mannerisms to ensure every visit to our organization left as a positive experience.
Project Manager
As a young project manager, I faced many challenges since my experiences were limited, but held a lot of responsibility. Challenges I faced were understanding the Army jargon, project management methodology, and my role as a leader. I overcame these challenges by having a great support of fellow junior project managers that I could confide and review processes on what worked and what didn't. More importantly I sought a senior project manager as a mentor to help me understand the Army's project management methodology and become my advocate when presenting to our plan to stakeholders. Overall, the projects and experiences I had during this time played a big impact on my interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
