I co-founded Avonglen in 2003 after finding there was a gap in the market for flexible finance director services for ambitious and growing businesses, or those who were facing change and challenges.Together with my business partners, we built on our combined decades of experience as Chartered Accountants and then finance directors to provide a comprehensive service that went way beyond the crunching numbers of an accountancy practice. We have experienced almost every business journey from start-up, venture capital investment and bank finance to international expansion, management buyouts and flotation. We’ve also seen the tough times and know how to respond.We aim to support businesses with the entire finance function, if necessary, from setting the strategic direction of a company to how this impacts the commercial model right down to the hands-on accounting operations. As well as managing the business, I work directly with business owners as an outsourced finance director and support a wider team of Avonglen’s finance directors to manage their own client accounts.

Responsible for all aspects of finance, administration & personnel throughout the group. In my ten years at Gullane I was part of a management team that had rapidly expanded the business from around 25 staff in 1991 generating £1m of operating profits in the UK and the US to well over 200 staff generating operating profits of around £16m with offices in the UK, US, Japan and Canada. The business was focused around the management of intellectual property rights and as a result of this had many different divisions within the group such as TV/Film production, distribution of these programmes to broadcasters, character licensing, publishing and live events (theatre shows and theme park rides).The group floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1996 and I was the number two to the then FD (now CEO) in the flotation process. The market capitalisation on float was £34m and on my departure was around £160m. Since its listing, Gullane completed five acquisitions totalling around £70m and achieved two successful vendor placings of shares with new investors. This broad brush experience has enabled me to draw on a vast amount of knowledge and expertise gained during these years.

My four years in London included managing and completing audit work on limited companies with turnovers ranging from £50,000 to £25m. Audit experience was also gained in specialised areas such as banking, charities, trade unions and universities.Other experience included accounts preparation for a range of businesses, simple tax computations and basic company secretarial duties.
