Undergraduate Student Researcher at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in the lab of Dr. Dilip ShahThe lab of Dr. Dilip Shah is involved in plant-fungal pathogen interactions to develop strategies for the development of fungal disease resistance transgenic crops. My project focused on the investigation of the antibacterial activity and mode of action of a novel dimeric defensin MtDef5. The cohesion of microbiology and genetics concluded that this novel defensin not only triggered bacterial and fungal death,but at nanomolar concentrations. The results have been applied to a Monsanto patent in field trials and allowed me to conduct applied plant research to further my understanding of the impact of both fungi and bacteria.
