In July of 2022 I was also assigned the role of General Circle Lead as another leader left to pursue her new dreams, becoming a solo Co-ED. As the Whidbey Institute adapted to the changing needs in the post pandemic world, we navigated a leadership transition in a holocratic organizational structure. My role during this transition time included supporting a team who was grieving the loss of staff and the impact of Covid, gathering our current understanding of who was needed next to join our team and energizing the hiring process to build back our team while listening for our next guiding vision.

  • Entrepreneurs For Sustainability (E4S)
    Co-Founder And President
    Entrepreneurs For Sustainability (E4S) Dec 2000 - Mar 2011
    Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area
The mission of E4S was to grow a sustainable regional economy. In the first ten years E4S attracted 10,000 leaders from all sectors of the economy and all sizes of organizations from start-ups to global corporations who were interested in putting sustainable business strategies to work to create value for their companies and the region. E4S was a non-profit economic development organization and a regional network of networks. E4S collaborated with leaders to Connect, Learn, Do Sustainability! In collaboration with other regional non-profits and network members we offered monthly networking programs to advance our collective knowledge of the why, what and how organizations were putting sustainability to work. At the first meeting network participants choose to go beyond learning to taking individual and collaborative action. Each month we celebrated the early adopters in local food, green building, energy, waste, transportation, water and other industries who were implementing sustainability practices. The entrepreneurial showcase and Champions of Sustainability awards were favorites. Early on we attracted entrepreneurs and offered business plan workshops and study groups. Later when intrepreneurs started to come to our monthly meetings we designed and facilitated a 9 month peer-based learning process for leaders that resulted in a sustainability strategic plan for their organization and connections with those who could help them implement their plan. Eventually we started several networks including the first biomimicry network in the world (BiomimicryNEO), Local Food Cleveland, ZeroWasteNEO and a general sustainability network in Akron, OH to compliment our network in Cleveland.E4S was closed in 2012 after the board recognized that many of the projects E4S had started were now being facilitated by institutions including the city of Cleveland Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative and university led sustainable business programs.
  • Wire-Net (Now Manufacturing Works)
    Manufacturing Assistance
    Wire-Net (Now Manufacturing Works) Jul 1994 - Jun 2001
    Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area
WIRE-Net is a non-profit economic development organization dedicated to improving the community through nurturing manufacturing and the jobs and prosperity that come with it. WIRE-Net is a problem solver. It works as a consultant, collaborator, referral source and hands-on provider in workforce development, growth and operational improvement initiatives, peer to peer and expert knowledge sharing, supply chain development, governmental assistance programs and urban redevelopment. My role was to start up a manufacturing assistance program that supported the growth and development of manufacturing companies focusing on their internal operations. We created a core group of manufacturing leaders who worked together to identify and design programs to meet the manufactures needs. Our most impactful program was a series of Manufacturing Learners groups – a peer-based 9 – month cohort learning model that invited a business owner plus 2-3 of his key leaders to attend monthly workshops with their peers from other companies. I co-created, facilitated and invited business leaders to participate in 11 learning groups during my time at WIRE-Net including groups focused on manufacturing excellence, supervision, kanban, quality, sustainability and more. The result was improved manufacturing businesses and a network of trusted relationships for manufacturing leaders that remains valuable today. It was at WIRE-Net that I documented my observations on how business leaders choose to make changes. Later I replicated this process at E4S and it became known as Connect, Learn, Do. We also replicated the Learning Group process at E4S.

I was able to leave my position at WIRE-Net for 7 weeks to intern in Snowmass and then continued the internship in Cleveland by delivering what I had learned to the manufacturing leaders in the WIRE-Net's network. What I learned at RMI was the basis of the work I did at E4S. Later I invited RMI to consult on a project for the Cuyahoga County Planning Department to conserve the Cuyahoga river basin.
  • Shorebank Enterprise Cleveland
    Entrepreneurial Assistance
    Shorebank Enterprise Cleveland 1993 - 1994
    Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area
Shorebank Enterprise Cleveland was an economic development organization focused on creating job and business opportunities in high poverty neighborhoods. SEC was a program of Shorebank, a community development bank founded and headquartered in Chicago. My role was to offer business development coaching and entrepreneurial support to entrepreneurs located in the business incubator and to those who lived in the neighborhoods we served. This was a new position in a start-up business. I received training from two leaders of Pittsburgh business incubators and enjoyed working with entrepreneurs from manufacturing and service industries. It was here that I learned more about business financials and business planning for start-ups. I left when leadership identified a candidate who would hold a broader role including incubator management.
  • Camp (Now Magnet)
    Technology Application Engineer
    Camp (Now Magnet) 1990 - 1993
    Cleveland/Akron, Ohio Area
CAMP, Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program, was one of the first NIST centers for manufacturing excellence in the country. Its mission was to support the growth and development of the manufacturing sector in Cleveland. We offered assessments of plant and operational practices and consulting services. CAMP later became Magnet, Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network. Magnet and WIRE-Net collaborate in the region to serve the manufacturing industry. My role was a new position in a new organization with a broad goal to assist manufacturers. We started with a geographic focus, each Technology Application Engineer selecting a part of the region to serve, often cold calling manufacturing owners asking them how we can support their business. Later we worked with industry clusters. After listening to a group of stamping industry leaders complain about the plating industry, I decided to call on plating companies to learn about their challenges. After hearing their challenges and understanding they did not have funds to invest in consulting, I collaborated with industry leaders to create an annual learning conference for plating professionals that continued after I left the organization.

This was a new market for GE plastics, a new territory with new end user relationships to develop.

  • Ge
    Quality And Process Engineer
    Ge 1983 - 1984
    Selkirk, Ny
'83- '85 Manufacturing Management Program – a two year leadership program offered to engineering graduates that includes two positions at each of two business units. The first year I worked at GE Plastics in Selkirk, NY as a quality engineer and a process engineer. The most impactful project increased productivity of the manufacturing lines by 20% opening up millions of dollars of production capacity and greatly reducing struggles between departments. After listening to production, maintenance and quality staff, I noticed each department stopped the production lines that later resulted in complications for another department, delaying production, and at times reducing the quality of the product resulting in scrap and rework. I designed a simple SPC charting system and trained all personnel on its use. My manager said I had done nothing short of changing the plant culture. This is an early indicator of my ability in systems thinking, seeing potential opportunities that lie between departments and my drive to reduce the struggles for all those in the system
