Director Defence Executive Leadership Programme

Defence Academy Of The United Kingdom

The Defence Academy's Centre for Defence Leadership and Management is responsible for delivering education and training for Defence through a portfolio of programmes. As Director Defence Executive Leadership Programme, I was Defence’s lead on board/top team leadership development. Innovating to create a bespoke executive-level leadership offering, the programme gained a first-class reputation and achieved an 88% approval rating across all top team development over a 3-year period. With each programme tailored to specific leadership development needs, the aim was to help senior managers gain a better understanding of: which leadership style would work best in their context; and how to improve their functioning as a team. Grounded in cutting-edge psychology theory, issues typically addressed included: promoting more effective communication; improving decision-making; enhancing trust relationships; raising levels of self-awareness; collaborating more effectively in setting future strategic direction; recognising derailing behaviours (individual and group); and building on strengths.Lacking a formalised approach, I co-conceived and introduced a proven 9-step process for leadership development that was subsequently adopted in support of Defence Transformation. The process was peer reviewed by the British Psychological Society’s Division of Occupational Psychology and was unanimously approved as capturing the important principles of ‘best practice’ for such interventions.Additional roles included: focal point for organisation development within the Defence Academy; thought leader on leadership and management strategy development; Defence lead with the Windsor Leadership Trust; primary point of contact with the Whitehall and Industry Group; Defence representative on the Public Sector Leadership Forum; lead negotiator for Defence’s senior leadership development programmes with Cranfield University; and Course Director for the Defence Leadership MSc.

Change Consultant/Leader (Internal)

Equipment And Support Continuous Improvement Team, Mod Abbey Wood

As an internal change consultant, I worked principally with major equipment support project teams embedded within the Ministry of Defence’s acquisition organisation to identify, design and implement change programmes geared at achieving substantial performance improvements.Employing a range of tailored change approaches, including lean thinking techniques, I helped team leaders and their teams to deliver impactful business change resulting in financial, process and organisation design benefits. My approach involved: coaching senior managers in adopting new approaches to equipment support planning as a business system; assisting project teams in creating the change and transition conditions required for business change to take hold; developing project team skills to ensure sustainability of the new approaches; supporting client change agents to embed new processes/methodology in the daily routine of project teams; and evaluating the extent to which business change was making a real and measurable difference to project team customers.Working as lead consultant with one such project team, the implementation of a complex business change programme resulted in the delivery of £6M of benefits.Additional consultancy work included: the marketing at strategic levels internally (submarines and ships project teams) of innovative approaches to major equipment support and externally with industry (Rolls Royce); overseeing the design of client awareness training modules; the creation of bespoke change models to support the implementation of business change; and the design/implementation of organisational models.
