My crew conducted corrective maintenence, preventative maintenence and during my tenure we began implementation of some predictive maintenence. I worked a split shift from 11 AM to 11 PM on a rotating schedule to cover supervision of two maintenence crews.I was responsible for conducting performance reviews for each of my employees. I issued 3 letters of commendation for outstanding work during my tenure. We had a computerized learning system which I oversaw and during my stay at OSC I completed 12 safety classes and 10 craft specialty classes such as pump maintenence and troubleshooting.

I was responsible for the daily safety activities during construction and was a resource to the managing engineers on such concerns as indoor CO air pollution from the use of powered equipment indoors. I provided investigations for the few incidents we had. I was once suppiened to give testemony in a major slip fall accident which occured on the Thanksgiving holiday shutdown. I was working and performed the initial investigation.

I was hired for a temporary position to oversee a roofing contractor working on two buildings for the Lamb Engineering Firm who were the general contractors for the project. Merck safety department removed the contractor for Safety violations while installing roofing. Eventually at Lamb's request the company was permitted to complete its task but only if they has a full time safety monitor present to inforce the fall protection and other safety rulles. My job was to observe a seven person crew and police compliance with fall protection tie off systems and good construction practices. This was very challenging as several of the employees were cronic rule breakers. I had authority to eject these contract employees from the sithe which I needed to do a few times. the roofing work was completed to the owners satisfaction and the assignment ended.

I started this positon as a new member of an established service team at the request of the then manager. Just before my start date my manager got a promotion and moved to a large new project. I was transfered to a global service team. My experience was not a good fit for the international refining tasks of this new grioup. I was transfered to work at the local R&D Center. I became the CHO for the toxicology Lab. I moved into IH manager for the site and had direction over a technician. I set up the IH section of the safety operation and purchased the basic survey instruments. I provided consulting to researchers as they prepared to set up experimental protocols. We conducted multple IH studies including asbestos, Radon, Lead paint and various hydrocarbon materials. I also conducted a major inspection of all of the site's exhaust ventilation equipment consisting of over 150 hoods and specialty systems. Ithen consulted on needed repairs and upgrades. I also conducted a large project involving the analysis of noise at several of the companies operations. I also oversaw a project to find and hire a radiation consultant to conduct a clearance test of a building that once was used for handling radioactive equipment, and was scheduled to be rehabilitated for other uses. The contractor and I surveyed the facility and he took instrument and wipe tests. With some minor areas of concern the buillding was found to be clean for the demolition project.I was asked to help set up an evacuation plan and conduct a series of drills to assue that employees and contractors could be removed from the building in an acceptible time frame. This included training Fire Wardens, writing the plan and holding debriefings after each drill.I was tasked to rewrite the currnet safety manual. In addition I developed a stand alone safety orientation program for engineers who had global responsibilities and did extensive foreign travel.

I was a safety engineer for a large R&D facility with 2,300 employees. I was their Laser Safety Officer,(LSO) I oversaw the MSDS program for the 4500 chemicals in our inventory, making sure that each user got an MSDS when they withdrew from the stock room. I was assigned to assist the various facility groups in developing their safety programs. This included: carpentry shop, meter repair, SEO's, welders, machinists, Electicians, Insulators, Grounds Crew and painters. I conducted regular training for this group. I ran two all-hands meetings where I brought in inspirational nationally renowned key-note speakers, (Jack Ware, Ring) to supplement our programs. These were very well recieved anresulted in enhancing participation and interest in safety. In one such program we increased seat belt use from 46% to over 85% in surveys conducted befor e and after the meetings. During this assignmant I met and became an Associate of The Lab Safety Institute preparing newsletter items and occassionally support training. I also Co-Authored an article on "Optical Density of Laser Protective Eyewear" with one of the Laser researchers who conducted tests on the reported OD of available laser safety goggles

This was an R&D company with 3 location s in NJ. I was the construction site safety manager for 2 1/2 years during the building of a 2.1 M ft2 Research facility in Annandale NJ During this same period I eddited a 240 page 15 chapter employee safety manual adding new sections on environmental controls and waste handling. I also continued my certification as an NSC DDC (Defensive Driving) instructior and presented abour 20 classes to company drivers in my service regions. I supervised thre safety equipment inspectors who regularly inspected and maintained numerous pieces of emergency equipment, including approximately 250 safety showers, 700 fire extinguishers, 2 emergency vehicles, emergency generators and tesying of 300 + pull station alarm boxes on a bi-enniel schedul which I developed.During this assignment I wrote and had published an article on "Writing a Safety Manual" in ASSE's Professional Safety.

Safety Engineer for several divisions. I worked with fuel oil delivery operations in NJ, NY and Maryland. I assisted in the development of about 10 MSDS's for company products. I became a certified trainier in both First aid and CPR and presented about 15 classes at company facilities in the south east. After 48 hours of ventilation we would don SCBA's perform safe entry procedures and then conduct IH analysis for lead and MBT. When the results came back, if they were negative we issued a safe entry permit for crews who performed inspection and cleaning and any necessary repairs before the tank could be put back in service for either leaded fuels or unleaded. We also performed flammable vapor checks for all compartments in floating roof tanks.I was one of two employees who performed limited IH monitoring in locations where the company stored and shipped Benzine. I often assisted the department manager in flow testing new fire apparatus or when the company improved its fire pumps or pumper operations.I assisted in the first time development of MSDS's for about 10 conmpany products.

I supervised 7 company Security Guards and 31 Cotract guards. I was responsible for the inspection and mainence of approximately 19 sprinkler systems and a vey large plant fire hydrant syetem. I oversaw 2 pipefitters one day a week who were assigned to me to perform fire protectin system repairs and maintenence. i was part of the emergency response team and oversaw a technician who maintained a respirator cleaning and inspection program for about 125 multiple use canister respirators.I participated in the response efforts to a major plant freeze-up event that lasted about 5 weeks during which time the plant was shut downand had many system wide failures and we experienced a suspect large release of plant chemicals to the Kanawha river. The entire facility was on 12/7 schedule and I split the 24 hour coverage with my technician providing emergency equipment, PPE and security.

I started as a jr Engineering Representative then became a Senior Engineering Representative after completing 2 years of service, a 3 week session of Home Office training and a large 18 chapter correspondence class. At the Home Office school I received two commendations for "Best in class" reports for the work we performed. During this time I attended night school at LaSalle College in Philidelphia taking 2 classes in Insurance and an additional 2 credit college level class in Introduction to Safety Engineering at Rider College in Lawrencville, NJ., recieving an "A" in all three classes. I recived certification as an ARC instructor in a special industry oriented 8 hour first aid class. Along with another similarly trained staff member we taught about 10 first aid classes to various large NJ clients. I was one of about 50 students who were trained in both standard and advanced first Aid and CPR. This was the extent of such training before the advent of EMT programs which developed years later. We staffed a 24/7/ 365 fully functioning Ambulance Service consisting of four vehicles.We serviced a very large town and its surrounds and worked closely with Municipal Police and County Sherrifs. We provided the only ambulance service for approximately 12,000 people. I worked approximately 3 eight hour shifts per week responding to from 8- 12 calls per week. We worked with one centrally located Hospital in the city called Good Shepard. depending on the time of day we could get transfers from Nursing Homes to Doctors and the hospital or we could respond to any call for our services from indusgtrial accidents to motor vehicl crashes. We were often called upon to transfer pations from Good Shepard to any number of other care facilities in Texas or Louisiana. this could involve total patient care for a trip of from 60 to 250 miles and several hour duration to such places as Shreveport, Dallas or Houston. This experience taught me many valuable professional and personal skills as well as confidence during often trying events and high stress, high speed activities. We were called upon to go to every area of the City and could encounter victims of bar fights, shootings, poisonings, suicides or life -threatening multi vehicle accidents.
