About Harry A. Rothmann

Ever since I was a young boy, I've loved and tinkered with gadgets. But not until I was a year past college graduation, did I realize that I could make a career out of this desire to utilize new technologies. My career has been a progression of responsibilities based on the fact that I can find creative ways to solve problems through technology. As the son of a career soldier, I grew up as an Army Brat, where life is in constant motion. You get exposed at a young age to continual change, new experiences, and people from all walks of life. Those experiences have a profound impact on who I am today. Some of my greatest strengths are adapting to the environment around me, and connecting with people.

  • Society For Science & The Public
Director Of Internal Operations And Technology
Society For Science & The Public Oct 2005 - Jul 2014
    Washington, Dc, Us
Responsible for the development and implementation of the overall technology and operational policy for the non-profit organization. Designed and implemented new projects to meet changing technology needs, while contributing to the achievement of the objectives specified by SSP’s overall mission. Over my time at SSP, the organization developed a reputation for being an extremely well run non-profit partner, whose events were efficient and effective. My role at SSP exposed me to a wide variety of challenges, as I had a hand in almost every aspect of the organization. I reported directly to the President of the organization, and had direct interaction with a distinguished Board of Trustees. I managed every technology contractor and staff member, as well as all the technical projects that we implemented. The technology we implemented had to meet the high standard of our all of our sponsors, tech giants Intel Corporation and Broadcom, as well as during our frequent interactions with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In particular, my role was heavily involved in the success of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world's largest international pre-college science competition. My department was responsible for a wide range of activities related to this six day event, often referred to as the "Olympics" of science competitions. The operational activities which I had direct oversight included the management of event logistics such as signage, registration, volunteers, shipping, receiving, security, judging, and related vendor contracts. The technological activities which I had direct oversight included the development of custom software which managed the judging, scientific review, display and safety, and registration processes, as well as A/V needs, hardware procurement and internet connectivity to support the 10,000 attendee event.
  • Science News
Director Of Internal Operations And Technology
    Science News Oct 2005 - Jul 2014
    Washington, Dc, Us
I oversaw the operational and technological components of the award winning publications Science News and Science News for Students (formerly Science News for Kids), providing insight into the strategic vision of the long standing magazine and managing technical projects to implement our goals. Despite the challenges of limited resources, we evolved our publications over time to adapt to the dynamic landscape of publishing. As a small non-profit organization surrounded by the uncertainty of an ever changing digital publishing world we were challenged to become early adopters of these alternate mediums, but our team made it happen. Amazon's Kindle and Apple iPad were released during my tenure with Science News and we quickly changed our business model to adapt. Our digital enhancements included a version for the original Amazon Kindle. We were one of the first 50 periodicals to go live in the Kindle store. Shortly thereafter, we launched a native application for the iPad. We launched the Science News iPad app by leveraging our staff's existing skill set by selecting the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to produce the weekly iPad publication. By the time I left the organization, our digital strategy included single sign on capability so that all SSP subscribing members could access our content through whichever medium was their preference, either via print, the web, the app, or the Kindle. In October 2013, we successfully launched a major revamped website which consolidated and enhanced our web presence, to include a responsive design optimized for mobile readers reaching a wider audience that was much more socially engaged via improved sharing and commenting tools. We introduced a paywall for our content, which helped drive users interested in our content towards purchasing membership in SSP.
