Most of 2014 and much of 2015: temporarily relocated to the opposite coast to transition a parent with Alzheimer’s and dementia into an Assisted Living Facility (ALF). As POA I was: responsible for coordinating all aspects of their diagnosis process and long-term care; the handling of their affairs; and tending to the disposition of nearly 50 years of accumulated “treasures” stored in their house, several sheds and even a storage unit or two. I mention the above only because of the new found self-awareness I acquired: while making the truly difficult, but necessary, decision as to when it was/wasn’t “time” to leave their residence and make the move to the ALF; during the delicate dance of capturing their healthcare and end-of-life wishes, before they were no longer able to cogently express/explain them; when filling the (seemingly) endless number of dumpsters. (So many items were “just junk” to me. But nearly everything (even the things that they had forgotten they had) represented something special to them. Their life. Their raising of 4 kids. Their very definition of themselves.)And with that I will make the very sincere, and heart-felt, offer to anyone reading this. If ever you would like to discuss some “lessons learned” in how to more-delicately, more-appropriately, more-respectfully deal with the whole “parent-child role reversal”; or the dynamics of being both a long-distance, and on-site, caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease; or what resources might be available to you, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I will be more than happy to share my perspective on what I think I got “mostly right” as well as what I could have done a little “better.”

Provided a variety of skills and expertise to small business owners in need of: technical writing support; website development; business management practices and polices; information security; customer service support; and other business development-related activities.
As Program Lead: Directed a team of multi-discipline experts (e.g., software developers, domain experts, reporting system specialists) in devising, implementing and supporting a forward-focused patient safety and quality of care reporting system. This Hazard Alerting Loop™ (HAL) significantly contributed to a hospital-wide Comprehensive Unit-Based Safety Program (CUSP) initiative by identifying potential, present and/or recently occurring hazards, dangerous near misses, unsafe practices and unsafe conditions. Key Results:– Increased SICU reporting rates by 500% (reporting rates increased from 41 to 210 per month) – Effected organizational improvements related to safety awareness and overall safety culture– Demonstrated the effectiveness of a user-centered approach in addressing reporting barriers As Lead Analyst: Provided unit-, service- and hospital-level leadership (e.g., medical directors, service directors and C-level staff) with weekly, bi-weekly and as-needed process improvement recommendations while generating weekly feedback materials for front-line personnel (e.g., physicians, nurses and ancillary staff). Point-of-care staff indicated that the program was particularly effective (atypically so) in communicating issues to management and it served as a catalyst for effecting changes and improvements. Key Results: – Identified previously under-reported problem areas (e.g., Team Communications, delays in service)– Illustrated that most safety hazards were unexpectedly systems-based, not just unit-based issues– Identified key areas in which hospital problem solving processes were in need of improvement
As Program Manager: employed Instructional System Design (ISD) methodologies in creating, fielding and evaluating easy-to-use, highly effective reporting systems and other mishap-reduction tools. Led a team of aviation subject matter experts (SMEs) and human factors experts (i.e., cognitive psychologists) in conducting customer needs assessments and gap analysis; identifying measures of performance and effectiveness; and devising formal and informal survey instruments. Assured compliance with life cycle plans and timelines.Key Results:– Crew Reporting System: Fast-attack Class Submarines (Commander, Submarine Force Pacific)– Crew Reporting System: US Navy Helicopter Squadrons (Commander, Naval Air Forces)– Multiple safety-related efforts (Naval Aviation Human Factors Quality Management Board (HF/QMB))As Lead Analyst: coordinated multi-person analysis teams in performing qualitative and quantitative analyses and trend detections. Authored, edited and oversaw quality assurance (QA) efforts related to all routine/non-routine reports and risk detection indicators for unit- and enterprise-level leadership. Provided unbiased suggestions for processes improvements which were subsequently employed by operational units.Key Results:– Active feedback loop encouraged 3,000+ voluntary reports from 5 squadrons in less than a year – Deemed an "honest broker" of information (as described by participating leadership personnel)– Identified multiple safety, workflow, training and motivation/morale issues that would have otherwise been un-reported and/or under-reported (as indicated in formal leadership surveys)
As Training Program Administrator: Curriculum and Instructional Standardization Officer responsible for allocating and maximizing utilization of training resources (e.g., 80 instructors, 5 classrooms, 12 simulators, 25 Computer Training Stations and 18 aircraft) for flight training programs in support of fleet readiness requirements. Direct reports included a staff of 20 highly experienced instructors and senior personnel.Key Results: – Optimized resources for 14 separate syllabi while graduating 200+ replacement crew annually– Solely responsible for 180 training day Master Training Plan involving a $5MM operating budget– Reduced time to train by more than 6 months saving over $340,000 in the first year alone
