Profile bio

About Hussein Mahfouz

I am a spatial data scientist with training and experience in quantitative geography, statistics, and network analysis. I am passionate about the different ways in which people move around, and how that ties to personal wellbeing, structural inequalities, and climate change mitigation. My current interest lies in the development of open-source, reproducible models that can be used to support the implementation of rapid decarbonisation strategies for the transport sector.I have many years of work experience in the transport sector (mainly in consultancy). I have been tasked with managing and owning the technical delivery of projects that relied on innovative data-driven methodologies. This included the creation of a spatially disaggregated employment model of Casablanca (for the World Bank), and the formulation of a methodology for assessing the impact of micromobility on accessibility to opportunities by leveraging GBFS feeds and multimodal routing engines (for the New Urban Mobility Alliance). I also worked on the Greater Cairo Region Mobility Assessment and Public Transport Improvement Study (MAPTIS) (for the World Bank). I led the data analysis component that fed into our mobility assessment report, focusing on spatiotemporal boarding and alighting patterns, passenger flow analysis, headway predictions, and GTFS feed creation from GPS dataI also have other project management experience, having successfully delivered a project on mapping and analysing the Trotro network of Greater Accra for the Ghanian Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization & Rural Development (MLGDRD). The project included a capacity building component for which I gave workshops for members of the local departments of transport. I have also managed a field research operation in which we mapped the entire public transport network of Greater Cairo. This included creating a sampling strategy, managing a team of 20 field researchers, and relying on constant feedback to adapt to ground truth. One of the main outputs was the first extensive GTFS feed for the city, including both formal and informal modes, which we have successfully added to Google Transit.

Listed skills include Writing, Urban Sociology, Urban Politics, Microsoft Excel, and 6 others.
