Nuclear Steam Supply System (Nsss) Engineer
Managed the performance of the Control Rod Drive (CRD), Primary Containment, Standby Liquid Control (SLC) and Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) systems for the Nuclear subdivision of a commercial energy production site generating 650 MW of electricity. Oversaw the station Corrective Action Program as the primary department Station Ownership Committee representative. Ensured plant safety, maintained production, and reduced costs while preventing critical equipment failures and improving system reliability and availability. Scoped and scheduled necessary work orders during refueling outages, which included Control Rod Drive Mechanism exchanges. Achieved zero rod double notches during an outage startup by selecting and replacing control rods while scheduling online corrective work orders. Monitored plant performance by performing daily reviews of available data, including data from plant processing computers, operator narrative logs, maintenance work order history, and digital recorders, to assess the health and performance of systems and write quarterly system health reports. Generated monthly Equipment Reliability Index (ERI) reports with Performance Indicators (PIs) that included Forced Loss Rate, Unplanned Power Reductions, and Critical Component Failures. Created, maintained and submitted the monthly top 10 equipment issue list to station senior managers. Delivered biweekly presentations on equipment issues related to system health and readiness to the Plant Health Committee consisting of department directors, and wrote weekly equipment reliability summary sheets.
Programs Engineer
Managed the Air-Operated Valve (AOV) Program, which included reviewing AOV designs, performing diagnostic testing, developing and coordinating preventative and corrective maintenance activities, and reviewing and addressing applicable Industry Operating Experience issues. Managed the In-Service Testing (IST) Program in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 50.55a(b) and ASME OM code, which included reviewing IST surveillance history, test acceptance criteria, testing methodology, and program basis documents. Performed equipment failure investigations, including an Apparent Cause Evaluation on a Main Steam Isolation Valve stroke time failure, and a Root Cause Evaluation on a Feedwater Regulating Valve failure. Maintained and updated the AOV database for setpoint control with recent field maintenance/testing results and performed margin-determination calculations to ensure AOVs operated safely and reliably. Benchmarked effectiveness of the AOV program based on observations from peers at other sites, station Nuclear Oversight, corporate program owner, INPO, and NSRB, as well as quarterly self-assessments. Verified engineering products to ensure compliance with applicable safety analyses, industry codes, engineering specifications, and regulatory requirements. Served as a liaison between the control room and the technical support center, which included responding to a site alert during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
Nuclear Operator
Monitored, controlled and operated nuclear station equipment for the control room. Started, stopped, controlled and monitored nuclear reactor and auxiliary reactor systems and steam turbine, main generator and auxiliary turbine generating equipment to maintain maximum station capability.
Clinic Team Leader & Researcher
Led a five-member team developing and evaluating the effectiveness of on-campus sustainability initiatives, including water-recycling plans and AstroTurf installation. Developed a set of efficiency metrics using a systems approach, including electricity and water usage. Researched evaluation reporting and metrics-building best practices for stakeholders. Managed a $13K budget for equipment purchases, travel, and sustainability conference visits. Published the action plan, mid-year and final report, meeting agenda, and minutes. Designed a database, frontend, and calculator in Visual Basic that organized and prioritized sustainability projects entered by the user and analyzed results according to flexible, user-defined parameters.
Senior Interviewer
Interviewed prospective students for Admissions department.
Linde Activities Center Supervisor
Supervised employees running the campus recreation center.
Clinic Team Member
Designed a “muon veto system” prototype to detect false positives in an antineutrino detector, as part of a six-member team. Identified that signals originating from muons could be distinguished from antineutrinos. Designed and assembled a frame used to support the scintillator paddles. Performed spatial analysis to measure the effectiveness of light transfer within each scintillator region. Determined the optimal position for the purposes of the muon veto system by a combination of experimentation and simulation.
