Redevelop, designing and upgrading online resources for Glasgow University's English Language and Linguistics Department.For this role I'm required to advise on technical aspects of the websites, taking into consideration functionality, appearance, content, and performance. Initial Planning - create a detailed set of design and technical specifications. Design Mock-ups – I was to give a visual representation of each of the website’s layout. Deploying my CMS, creating the new template and page designs, and setting up the website’s analytics. I am also responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting each of the websites and responsible for creating backups of the website. Understanding and resolving coding and server problems, Updating content of the website transfer of data to server using ftp.Upload files using file transfer protocol (FTP a set of rules that computers follow for the transferring of files from the local site to the remote site).

Create, develop the layout, maintain, publish and market content for the Glasgow University School of Critical Studies web pages which also includes the Glasgow University Laboratory of Phonetics (GULP) and (Stella) Website using Terminal Four Web Content Management System.(GULP) is a research and teaching laboratory which also has a main lab and a specialist-recording studio, located within English Language. Its facilities support teaching for Honor’s (third and fourth year) undergraduate students, as well as master’s and Doctoral students, and staff and research fellows also benefit.(STELLA) is a computer-assisted learning project, which has developed teaching software that can be incorporated into courses and enhance learning in tutorial and self-access modes.For this role I had to coordinate the material for each of the web pages such as producing the text, images, build content. Then I had to do the planning, gathering resources and content for the web pages and deciding how the web pages will look and structuring the website. To update and manage websites for the school of critical studies including the British Association of Academic Phoneticians (BAAP) website (funder: BAAP);BAAP is the professional organization for phoneticians in the British Isles. Its members are involved in research in phonetics, in teaching phonetics in higher education, and in the application of phonetic knowledge in areas such as speech and language therapy, speech technology and forensic science.For this role I was responsible in managing and building up some of the content for the website. I also had to change any links that needed to be changed and updated. I also had to get in contact with the president of the BAAP association about any other additional changes that had to be made and once everything was finished, I then published the website. I was also responsible for updating and entering new words and definitions for a project called the Scottish Language Dictionaries word collection database. The online resources is called Sounds of the City resource (funder; Leverhulme Trust) of which I was the web developer.The Sounds of the City project at Glasgow University looks into speech sounds of Glasgow past and present.For this role it required excellent communication skills, presenting graphic concepts, programming and planning skills, for the job I also had to take notes of details and maintaining a list of the functionalities and behaviors and I was able to answer both technical and non-technical questions and requirements when liaising with colleagues so that I would be able to demonstrate my own thoughts on different ideas and interfaces when developing and designing the website. I had to convey ideas with academic staff and the lead Professors involved in the research project.

The online resources is called the Dynamic Dialects (funder: Arts and Humanities Research Council) of which I was the original web developer.The Dynamic Dialects website contains an articulatory video-based corpus of speech samples from world-wide accents of English. Videos in the corpus contain synchronised audio, ultrasound-tongue-imaging video and video of the moving lips.For this role it required excellent communication skills, presenting graphic concepts, programming and planning skills, for the job I also had to take notes of details and maintaining a list of the functionalities and behaviours my client required of which I had to design and develop. Preparing, organizing and extracting data using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel for the Mapping Metaphor project (funder: Arts and Humanities Research Council) The Metaphor Map of English is a project that shows the metaphorical links which have been identified between different areas of meaning. These links can be from the Anglo-Saxon period right up to the present day so the map covers 1300 years of the English language.For this role I gained team and time management skills. I was responsible for entering new words and definitions for the Scottish Language Dictionaries word collection database.The National Word Collection is a ongoing electronic record of spoken and written Scots. They research a wide variety of sources through two major programmes, the Reading Scheme and the Oral Collection Scheme, and the information we gather is compiled into the Word Collection. They use the information in the Word Collection to compile and update all our dictionaries and dictionary projects.For this role I had to perform basic administration tasks as well as gaining office support skills.Skills Used: Database Management, Communication, Marketing, Organizational and Decision-making skills, Excellent Literacy and Numeracy skills.

To enter information into computer databases and to type in data accurately and get involved in advanced proof - reading skills for the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (funder: Arts and Humanities Research Council)The Historical Thesaurus of English is the first historical thesaurus ever produced for any language, containing almost every word in English from Old English to the present day and consists of almost every recorded word in English from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day, all arranged into detailed hierarchies of meaning.Of major interest to historians, philologists, linguists, and the general reader, the Thesaurus is an unrivalled resource for the historical study of the language.For this my role I had to type in data, answer telephone inquiries, to perform basic administration tasks, create and run queries using MS Access database, as well as gaining Office support skills.Skills Used: Data - Entry skills, Advanced Proof - Reading skills, Creating and Running Queries using MS Access Database, Office Support skills, Administrative skills, Basic Literacy and Numeracy skills, Organizational skills.
