Hands-on architect responsible for the design of Core TV Solution's set-top box software technologies and their integration with in-house, manufacturer, customer and 3rd-party systems. Includes customer and internal stakeholder liaison for requirements capture and specification construction, together with subsequent interaction with the in-house development teams, manufacturers and end customer's infrastructure and test teams for the product's implementation. The in-house activities being performed using an Agile methodology. Hands-on activities include minor hardware modifications and the development, testing and debugging of new and updated features within both Linux and RTOS set-top box embedded environments, together with performing engineering code reviews and providing support for the manufacturer and customer engineering activities. Development is primarily using C and C++ with some exposure to other languages (such as Java and Perl) using JIRA, Git and Gitlab.

Head of Architecture for the set-top box, infrastructure and broadcast teams with a technical and hands-on focus for the development of embedded products and their interfacing to backend cloud systems, both in-house and with customer content management systems. Overall architecture responsibility and management of individual group architects together with some continued hands-on development.

Set-top Box Group Manager with overall responsibility for the 25+ set-top box platform design and development team members that were based both in the UK and abroad. Subsequently obtained additional temporary responsibility for the Test department and in-house/3rd-party Infrastructure development activities.

Technical Architect and Senior Software Engineer. Responsible for the design, development and integration of the companies broadcast and IP connected content technologies onto multiple manufacturer's embedded set-top box platforms and with end-customer back-end systems. Architecture role involved liaising with end customers, manufacturers and internal stackeholders to capture and document both system-wide and set-top box requirements and then provide designs and guidance to the development and test teams. Development was carried out primarily in C with additional C++ and Java in a Linux environment, with some exposure to Perl, SQL and Bash scripting for targets using both Linux and various embedded operating systems. Development undertaken using both traditional waterfall and later Agile methodologies with support from Git, Gitlab, SVN, Redmine and JIRA.

Systems integrator responsible for integrating the TiVo PVR technology with Virgin Media's cable network for the UK market. Responsible for integrating and debugging the TiVo software stack on multiple manufacturer's hardware in the live environment, liaising with the customer and development teams in the USA and elsewhere and providing in-network development system access for remote developers. Development carried out in a Linux environment for an embedded Linux platform in C/C++, with SQLite and Bash scripting and maintained via Perforce version control system.

Software architect responsible for the design, enhancement and continued development of the application stack used on the Top Up TV range of video-on-demand personal video recorders and the porting of the system to new hardware platforms provided by different manufacturers. Responsibilities include the investigation, analysis and design of new features, feature implementation, bug fixing and the porting to new hardware platforms, together with some responsibility for the office IT infrastructure and source code repositories.

Senior software engineer involved in the design and development of a portable iDTV product and the design, development and management of an enhanced personal video recorder to an external customers specification. Written in C, these products primarily used a number of ST MicroElectronics embedded processors and an ST real-time operating system. Responsibilities included interfacing with the customer, production and tests teams, system design, direct development and the management of a small development team.

Project team leader developing closed-loop VCR control systems and digital TV related products; including set-top boxes, iDTV’s and personal video recorders, both in-house and for external companies located in the UK and abroad. The majority of the applications were written in C for various embedded processors, which in turn utilised a number of real-time operating systems and Linux. Some development was also carried out in C++ and Perl/XML.

Senior analyst programmer responsible for small teams developing in-house applications that included; a data acquisition and service management system written for Psion hand-held devices using object based C, connecting via a radio data network or regionally based Windows NT/SQL Server systems and ultimately onto centrally based servers, a Windows NT GUI and service to create a commercial digital jukebox management system and the development of a system to network the companies gaming machines in order to enable data acquisition and central control functions. Responsibilities included the development of user requirements, work estimates, direct development and/or the management of small teams and secondary support functions together with the evaluation and selection of third party products.

Designed and implemented stable isotope scientific instrumentation both in-house and in conjunction with overseas customers. The applications were written for Microsoft Windows using MS Visual C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Class libraries and involved the real-time control of instruments and the accessing of databases using the ODBC and SQL drivers.

Software engineer responsible for the design and implementation of IBM PC based instruments using C, Forth and 8086 assembler. Produced many bespoke implementations at the head office and on customer premises in the UK, Europe and the USA. Provided technical support both in-house and to customers for both the company range of products and general office applications and equipment. The latest products, both release and demonstration versions, were developed for Microsoft Windows using MS Visual Basic and MS Visual C++. Experience also gained in a variety of standard applications together with Borland C++ and its OWL libraries, Pascal, 8088, 8051 and Z80 assembler.
