In gaining this experience, I have been involved in several engineering design teams. I spent the Winter designing an electrode to improve DNA separation methods for a Tuberculosis research lab in Cape Town, South Africa. My Fall, Senior Capstone team was contacted by a worldwide gardening equipment supplier to design and build a user-centered product which is going to markets soon. This past Summer, I worked in a graduate mechanical engineering laboratory to create a new method for administering drugs and skin augmenting materials to patients: biomedical tattoos. This involved the designing, 3D printing, casting, and testing of various needle arrays with ink. Beginning last year, I have been collaborating in micro-scale surface manufacturing research under Professor Ping Guo: involving precision machining, mold making, and laser deposition. I have further developed these skills through a mold machining and injection molding course using NX computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing software. Additionally, during my two quarters in Design Thinking and Communication classes, I developed skills in human centered design, 2D and 3D sketching, team organization, client communication, design research, prototyping, and shop machinery use and building. I was also a member of the Northwestern University Formula Team and played a part in the designing and building of the suspension and frame of our car. This taught me skills in Solidworks 3D computer aided design modeling, computer aided manufacturing, and advanced knowledge in shop machining. Along with my technical skills, I also have held leadership roles. I was the president of my fraternity of around 100 members for a year, the Vice President for Community Engagement on our university’s Interfraternity Council, and led the Northwestern Freestyle Ski Team as the captain. I served as chief client communicator for my team in my Design Thinking and Communication course as well, giving me valuable leadership and communication skills. In addition, I have worked in chemistry, physics, civil engineering, and fluid mechanical laboratories from my academic studies.
