Dr. Ian Willson is internationally recognized for pioneering accomplishment in large scale data analytics based on his innovations in parallel processing. His inventions drive industry standards, product capabilities and play an increasingly important role in getting value from massive data sets such as airplane sensor data and factory data (tags) at Boeing, where he is the Boeing Senior Technical Fellow for Data Engneering.Ian's temporal database design inventions and patents solved critical data analytics challenges for the 787 Dreamliner and won the Boeing Special Invention Award in 2013. He influence the ANSI SQL:2011 temporal standard as well as influencing the design of native temporal capabilities in Teradata (13.10 and 14.10). Recent inventions solved the scalability problem of full detail airplane sensor data analytics, providing a patented method that provides orders of magnitude improvement over the best existing methods adopted by industry. Ian's recent work is laying the foundation for truly interactive large scale full range data analytics combining all available sensor data, engineering, manufacturing, shop floor and in service data. Ian’s 3 temporal SQL patents have been referenced as prior art in 150 other patents.Prior accomplishments include pioneering work in predictive analytics based on fuzzy set theory (100 citations), the invention of consumer air travel booking based on intelligent software and inventing the industry standard for business travel analytics.
