Lawyer | Regulator | Chartered Secretary (FCG) | Trustee/NED | My work focuses on mutual societies including co-operatives, community benefit societies, friendly societies, credit unions, and building societies.For over a decade I’ve worked for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in its capacity as registering authority for mutual societies. My role covers aspects of law, governance, policy, strategy, training, data and decision-making. Outside of work, I spent 5 years as Chair of the UK Society for Co-operative Studies, where I remain a trustee. I’m also a trustee of the Co-operative Heritage Trust. I’m a chartered secretary and governance professional, and a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute (FCG). I was called to the Bar in 2010 (unregistered barrister). I also serve as a member-nominated director of the FCA Pension Plan Trustee. All posts, comments, likes etc on here are made in a personal capacity. I was a member of various sub-groups including: policy response, financial strategy, and trustee recruitment. While there I led a governance review involving a range of members, alumni and staff, putting forward a comprehensive report to the Board and the membership. Other work involved writing the CEO succession policy, trustee recruitment guidance, and numerous reviews of the rule book. While on the Board the board was recognised as 'board of the year' at the Third Sector Excellence Awards.The British Youth Council (BYC) is led by young people, for young people, aged 25 and under, across the UK. It offered a range of services for conflict between neighbours, in the workplace, and in the area of health. As a director of the charity I provided strategic input, challenge, and hands-on support, such as in helping the charity successfully receive the 'Social Enterprise Mark'.

Business Development ManagerCo-Operatives Yorkshire And The Humber Dec 2009 - Dec 2010Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber (SEYH) acted as Business Development manager for Co-operatives Yorkshire and the Humber, the Regional Co-operative Council. My work invovled working across the co-operartive movement in both the region and nationally with other regional co-operative councils. We came up with the idea of 'Futures North' - a pioneering conference in the North of England. I led on the organisation of the confernece where we secured speakers such as Linda McAvan MEP, and Dame Pauline Green, the then President of the International Co-operative Alliance, as well as running over a dozen workshops. While working there, the objectives of Co-operatives Yorkshire and the Humber were to:-Raise the profile of the co-operative sector-Represent the interests of co-operatives-Encourage mutual support, inter-trading and networking-Share best practice, training and development opportunities between co-operatives within the region and beyond-Strengthen co-operative endeavour by lobbying and working with local, regional and national organisations -
Chair/Co-OrdinatorFairtrade Yorkshire Dec 2009 - Dec 2010Founded, co-ordinated and chaired Fairtrade Yorkshire, the campaign to be the world's first Fairtrade Region. While volunteering as the Chair of Fairtrade Leeds, and building on my work across region at SEYH, I brought together activtists from across the region with the common goal of supporting each other to increase the profile of Fairtrade in the region. We worked with the Fairtrade Foundation on a set of goals to become the world's first Fairtrade Region.
