Profile bio

About Ian Thompson

Before beginning this current stage of my career, I completed my PhD work developing novel biosensors and diagnostics with Dr. Tom Soh. Throughout the degree, I brought together biomolecular engineering, antibody/DNA nanotechnology, and electronic/optical device design to address important clinical needs.During my Bachelors degree in Engineering Physics at UBC, I was fortunate to be exposed to a mix of rigorous theoretical background in electrical engineering and applied physics, alongside numerous real-world experiences taking on biomedical device challenges with research teams at the BC Cancer Research Center and BC Children's Hospital.I'm always interesting in learning more about how people are using innovative science to improve healthcare, both in the academic world and in industry.

Teaching Assistant (Biological Macromolecules, Analytical Methods In Biotechnology)

Adapted a a graduate-level course in biological macromolecules into an online, flipped-classroom approach in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This included creating new online content, designing and teaching weekly problem-solving exercises, and facilitating discussions of key scientific literature.Led graduate students new to biotechnology in learning essential wet-lab techniques like PCR, gel electrophoresis, cell culture, CRISPR, and more.

Cancer Imaging Co-Op Student

Vancouver, Canada

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), is an imaging tool using short pulses of laser light to image tissue, similar to ultrasound but with a much higher resolution. Fusing experience with optics and mechanical design, I am working on redesigning a key component of the OCT system, in the hopes of improving the diagnostic power of this test. Throughout my research I have been supported by the J. M. Warren Award which is given to BC's top undergraduate cancer researcher.

Research And Development Co-Op Student

Supervisor: Dr. François BénardLab Information: http://molonc.bccrc.ca/benard-lab/I explored cutting edge technologies and new approaches to improving current systems used in PET/CT imaging and research. I made significant contributions to two particular projects:1. Automating and increasing efficiency of production of agents to be used in PET imaging. This uses a novel microfluidic approach which combines several steps in production, and automation is achieved with NI LabVIEW. Rapid prototyping techniques were used to design compact mechanical systems and increase the system's ease of use. 2. Designing and evaluation a low cost alternative to expensive infrared-based techniques for increasing image quality of PET/CT for abdominal tumors. Analog Electronics were designed in NI Multisim and signals are processed using an Arduino to create a compact system.

May 2016 - Sep 2016

Tigress Co-Op Student

The TIGRESS experiment within the Gamma Ray Spectroscopy Group implements cutting edge radiation detectors to probe the nucleus, informing our understanding of atomic structure. As a co-op student, I monitored, repaired, and assembled the experiment's precise electrical and mechanical systems. Efficiently coordinating with research scientists, graduate students, and technicians, I assured the preparations stayed on time, meeting critical deadlines for an important experiment run.

Jan 2015 - Apr 2015

Summer Program Leader

The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program breaks down physical, social, and financial barriers to make sport accessible to athletes with disabilities. As Summer Program Leader I coached athletes with a wide range of disabilities in a large variety of sports. Many participants were able to reach goals and create experiences which would have otherwise not been accessible. Throughout my work, I mentored a group of athletes with developmental disabilities to find joy, independence and personal growth through sport. I also organized and promoted two large community fundraisers, bringing in over $20,000 to assure that the programs could remain available for all those in need.
