About Ian Chapman
Music and the performing arts have been the single biggest influence on my life. They have helped me build self-esteem, develop self-confidence, overcome considerable hardships and challenges, develop business and professional acumen, and become the person I both wished, and needed, to be. These life-enhancing lessons are important, fundamental and yet often lacking in the modern world. Consequently, at the beginning of 2019 I relinquished my position as Convener of the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree at the University of Otago to take my expertise beyond the confines of the university campus and into the wider community and the business world.A common thread throughout my career has been performing. This has always been primarily music performance (both semi-professionally and professionally) but today my passion lies in combining speaking and music to help others realise their potential and goals. A great deal of the skillset required of a performing arts practitioner is transferrable to the everyday lives of all of us, resulting in extraordinary improvements in self-confidence and self-empowerment. In talks that draw upon my own experiences of this remarkable transformation as well as the experiences of others – especially the ground-breaking example of David Bowie – I seek to similarly empower others.During the course of my academic music career, I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to pursue my musical performance passions in areas other than teaching. From this has arisen opportunities to:• Write books• Give public lectures• Deliver keynotes at conferences• Be interviewed in national and international media• Co-edit and produce a documentary All these activities have been part of my journey of self-discovery. I share these lessons with organisations that understand music and the wider sphere of performing arts can have a transformational impact on people’s lives. To discuss how I can help your team email glitterspreader@gmail.com

Motivational Speaker
Through my years of performing and teaching, I have developed a passion for motivational speaking and am often asked by companies to talk to their teams about self-empowerment, personal reinvention, anti-bullying, confidence building and the value of being “different". I use techniques drawn from the performing arts – most especially music – as employed by artists such as David Bowie, with the goal of helping people identify and ultimately attain their full personal and professional potential. I share the lessons learned from overcoming significant hurdles in my own life so my talks frequently incorporate elements of autobiography. Because I am a musician, I also perform relevant music to illustrate certain points and this education / entertainment mix helps me stand out from other speakers.
