During this period we managed to undertake an environmental management plan for the 7 Dams area which revealed its ecological importance, undertake volunteer work to conserve the area, raise funds for a conservator and environmental education, and fight development in adjacent land on areas of high ecological value. The area is increasingly used by residents for walking, running, cycling and for educational activities

This programme pioneered an institutional-development approach in southern Africa, later used by DFID as a model for several programmes in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya and by SIDA, NORAD etc. The capacity-building work included support for learning-by-doing and running workshops from 1-10 days long in planning and management skills.
