During this period we managed to undertake an environmental management plan for the 7 Dams area which revealed its ecological importance, undertake volunteer work to conserve the area, raise funds for a conservator and environmental education, and fight development in adjacent land on areas of high ecological value. The area is increasingly used by residents for walking, running, cycling and for educational activities

CeoKhanya-Aicdd Aug 1998 - Sep 2009Khanya-African Institute for Community-Driven Development is a not-for-profit Institute working on community-driven development and sustainable livelihoods in Southern and Eastern Africa. Khanya-aicdd's mission is to transform development systems to support the livelihoods of poor people. Ian was one of the founders of Khanya-aicdd, and with colleagues developed the systems, brand, set of methodologies and participatory approach to management for which Khanya has become known, including around the sustainable livelihoods approach (SLA), community-driven development including community-based planning, community-based workers, approaches to funding communities etc. Undertook facilitation, research and consultancy on wide range of assignments from community (eg community-based planning) to international level (eg workshop of African Ministers on CDD). Documented this work extensively. -

I then became Chair, with secretariat from a French organisation, CELAVAR. Responsible for representing VIRGIL with European Commission and Parliament, chairing Board etc, then as coordinator facilitating the network, development of transnational projects, liaison with European Commission and Parliament. The network promoted an integrated and participatory approach to rural development, but finally closed in 2009.

Facilitator, Serenje DistrictIrdp/Ddsp Mpika-Serenje Chinsali 1982 - 1987Facilitating the development of capacity of Serenje District Council in Zambia to plan and manage rural development. Included development of capacities and systems for planning, implementation and monitoring of economic and social development including agriculture, roads/bridges, health, water, education. Specific programmes included an oxenisation-programme, community-based water programme, hand-built road construction and maintenance, construction of rural clinics, low-cost schools, and financial management and maintenance systems. This programme pioneered an institutional-development approach in southern Africa, later used by DFID as a model for several programmes in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya and by SIDA, NORAD etc. The capacity-building work included support for learning-by-doing and running workshops from 1-10 days long in planning and management skills.
