I was leading a program that is studying the feasibility of utilising hydrogen fuel cell powered trains on Toronto’s commuter rail network as an option for the transition away from diesel fuelled trains. The objective of the feasibility study is to understand the technological and economic feasibility of a Hydrail system. This has involved creating a detailed Operational Simulation Model of the proposed system that calculates hydrogen consumption on the rail vehicles and hydrogen production in the supporting infrastructure. The outputs of this model have then been used to determine the benefit cost ratio of the investment. The feasibility study is also considering:• regulatory requirements of a Hydrail system;• environmental consequences;• socio-economic benefits;• how Hydrail would function as an operational railway;• steps for transitioning Hydrail into operation;• potential commercial arrangements for implementing Hydrail.As part of my responsibilities I am also involved in briefing Metrolinx senior management team and government ministers on the potential benefits of Hydrail, particularly in relation to cost savings compared to traditional electrification and the beneficial impact that it could have on the price of electricity in Ontario.
