The role of fieldwork managers is to support research officers in the management of projects and researchers. They have extensive contextual knowledge about Somaliland, Puntland and/or Somalia, and are continually looking for ways to use that knowledge to augment the quality of research conducted by Consilient. They have a strong understanding of research methods and design, and demonstrate this understanding through their contributions to project design and implementation. Their input is vital to tool design and fieldwork planning. They regularly liaise with government officials and local communities to negotiate access on behalf of Consilient field teams. Fieldwork managers are responsible for providing quality control of both quantitative and qualitative data on the projects they are working for. This requires a continual increasing of skills in stata, excel, and qualitative analysis. Fieldwork managers regularly identify and manage external hires on behalf of Consilient. They are the main point of contact for the core staff and temporary staff conducting fieldwork for a project. The position of fieldwork manager is largely office based, however, when needed fieldwork managers are also responsible for conducting high quality qualitative and quantitative field research, specifically on Consilient’s high-level, sensitive and complex projects. Fieldwork managers are responsible for the entirety of the research process, they fully understand the aims and purposes of a project, and ensure that all outputs and deliverables are of high quality. They are expected to assume Consilient’s most challenging research tasks and deliver high quality output with minimal need for review or external quality control. Fieldwork managers act with professionalism when asked to do any task that could be asked of all other researchers; they are the ones who set the example of the kind of quality and work ethic all staff should have when completing the simplest to the most complex task.

The role of a senior researcher is to provide consistent good quality quantitative and qualitative research. Their research products require review, quality control, and feedback in order to increase their quality. They are outstanding enumerators and team members. They have a basic understanding of research methods. They are given specific tasks to complete to the best of their ability. They are known for their enthusiastic outlook on all labor intensive project needs, such as transcription, basic translation, and data entry. Researchers are the leaders in any CATI project and can lead the trainings. They also have the ability to co-facilitate training alongside research officers or senior researchers. They are avid learners who always ask clarifying questions and strive to learn new skills. They are excited for opportunities to lead various research tasks, but require extensive management and quality control. These staff require significant improvement in some areas of the research process before being entrusted further.

Calling people to conduct interviews - The phone enumerator will receive a list of individuals to be called and some forms related to phone responses level, and the interviews form to be conducted. Specific daily targets will be set by the supervisor for each survey conducted - Data entry for the interview conducted will be filled, on a simultaneous manner on the data entry website system. The phone enumerator is therefore working with an earphone and microphone allowing conducting data entry while over the phone. - Quality review of the phone interviews performed will be conducted by supervisor and feedback to enumerators will be provided for self-improvement. - A phone call is a relatively cold communication and therefore the presentation of the enumerator, the company, the purpose of the survey, the survey timing and content, will be part of key element to increase the level of participation but also the quality of response. Self-verification, checking what makes sense and what does not across the various sets of questions. - Always ensure to create a respectful professional approach to anyone you contact - Establishing trust, respecting key principles such as confidentiality will remain key element of this task. Questions from respondents should also been answered as part of the “trust building” prior the interview. Also, the call center should be a center for anyone to call and report concerns or express a need to voice any point to the donors or aid community. The way the interview is conducted should contribute to convince the respondents that they can call us back. - The call center has also some phone number dedicated to receive calls from the population willing to communicate with us.
