I believe in a way of fundraising which takes the long term view. As a fundraiser with over 35 years experience, working for charities, agencies and as a consultant, I’ve learnt these are the essential ingredients:1. BELIEF. Find both your ‘why’ and your organisations why. It’s emotional and it will give you that extra drive. 2.KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. Who are the people who share your beliefs and values? How can you attract them?3. GIVE A GREAT EXPERIENCE. When people support you give them an awesome experience - one they won't forget so they will be back for more.4.ENABLE OTHERS TO TELL YOUR STORY. What’s your organisations story narrative, that is simple and powerful that others want to share.5.BE READY TO REACT. Because when people contact you that’s the moment they are most engaged. Are you ready to respond?6. MEASURE THE MAGIC. Embed the systems and measures track and drive you each week. How it all connects results in sustainable income that stands the test of time - I call it renewable fundraising. It’s not short term, it doesn’t deplete your donor base. But it takes time.I believe EVERYONE is now a channel. By getting people and organisations, who share what you believe in, to advocate on your behalf you can leverage these new channels to your advantage. Your story is more powerful coming from someone else to their network than it is coming from you. And it gets better, because in this increasingly connected world you do not know who people know. For charities this can scale up support through referrals and recommendations by supporters to their networks, leading to fundraising magic. It’s not easy. It takes patience and belief. I’ve applied this thinking during my tenure at SolarAid - first for 5 years from 2011 to 2016 and then again from 2021 when I returned. I truly believe this approach to fundraising has a profoundly influenced our ability to impact on the lives of people for the better. It's enabled us to weather difficult times and step up to our ambitious mission.I logged this thinking on this blog : www.ifundraiser.wordpress.comLook out for future posts :) If you are willing to share some learning about sustainable fundraising I’d love to hear from you.
