About Ian G. Giles, Pfhea

I am an Emeritus Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton, having been the University Director of Education (Quality and the Learning Environment). I also have served as the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Education). I completed the Management and Leadership in Higher Education Institute run by the Graduate School of Education, Harvard University.I gained a first class degree in Physiology & Biochemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry. My research interests are in the areas of bioinformatics, and protein structure and function. In addition, I have always had a passion for student learning. This has driven me to become increasingly involved in academic staff development and quality processes that result in continuous enhancement and institutional change. It was under my leadership that Southampton became one of the first two universities to have their internal staff development programmes accredited against the UKPSF by the Higher Education Academy. I have acted as external examiner at undergraduate, taught postgraduate and doctoral levels and as an external advisor for new developments.I held a number of offices in the University of Southampton: including coordinating the first two years of the Medicine degree, Deputy Head of School (Education) for the School of Biological Sciences, Director of Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Medicine, Health & Biological Sciences (2000-2003) and as the first Associate Dean (Education) in the newly created Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. MHLS comprised the Schools of Biological Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Sciences, and Psychology. When my term of office finished I became the Director of the university Learning & Teaching Enhancement Unit.I have had links to the QAA for over twenty years. I have been a Specialist Subject Reviewer, Major Review Facilitator, Institutional Auditor, IRENI reviewer and HER reviewer. Currently, I am a TDAP/RDAP scrutineer and IQR reviewer. I was the specialist author for two Chapters (B3 and B5) in the UK Quality Code. I have been involved in numerous activities involving many of the PSRBs in the UK Health and Social Care arena. I was co-opted to the Quality, Accountability and Regulatory Strategic Advisory Committee (QARSAC) of HEFCE until the OfS replaced the HEFCE as the UK regulator.I have conducted QA/QE activities in the UK, Mauritius, Libya, Sri Lanka, Thailand and UAE for various bodies including WHO, the British Council, QAA and the Higher Education Commission of Mauritius.
