I am a researcher at INEGI and an invited assistant professor at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP).I have started my research career in computational mechanics in 2009, with a scientific initiation grant. At that time I have started to learn about numerical methods, with particular emphasis on the finite element method. I had the opportunity to implement a Fortran program with optimization algorithms that was linked with an in-house Fortran FEM code, to perform numerical material parameter identification. I have also implemented a non-linear constitutive law in the FEM code.In the context of my master's thesis (2013), I have started to work with multi-scale models based on computational homogenisation, which turned to be the main topic of my work towards a PhD degree.During the years of PhD research (2014-2019), the tasks I have passed through involved parallel computing (openMP and MPI), non-local modelling, multi-scale modelling and second-gradient continua at finite strains. The main contributions are related to the formulation of multi-scale models for second-gradient continua analyses and the development of algorithms for their efficient implementation in a FEM framework.This work has been developed in the CM2S research group (https://www.researchgate.net/lab/Computational-Multi-Scale-Modeling-of-Solids-and-Structures-Francisco-M-Andrade-Pires) at FEUP, where I participated in the implementation of a Beowulf cluster for distributed parallel computing (Atlanticus), and in the development of a Fortran in-house FEM code called LINKS, that resulted from a merge between other existing codes, and allows standard, micro-scale and coupled-scale simulations. Since 2020 I am also collaborating with Porto Composites research group.While I was a PhD student, I started to teach Technical Drawing and Mechanical Engineering Drawing at FEUP. More recently, I had the opportunity to teach Finite Element Method, Mathematical Analysis I and II, and Numerical Analysis. I was also a member of Invicta Toastmasters Club (https://tmclub.eu/portal.php?page=3493), where I contributed as Sergeant at Arms and Vice-President for Membership.
