“To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe.” Having this mindset has allowed me to efficiently maneuver and adapt to any challenge or new environment that gets put in front of me. Whether it was jumping into the sales industry with no experience or going from a store’s dishwasher to store manager, I relish the opportunity to excel in new spaces. While I’m working to become a data analytics specialist, the goal is no different. Study hard to learn as much of the subject, but to also sit back at times and absorb valuable information from those who have already cemented their selves in the field. A healthy balance of both has and will lead me to being successful.As I transition from the workforce to the Year Up program, I have been able to observe the skills I’ve brought over from previous jobs and how it translates to my studies. Patience has become crucial to my success because like many, you want to be able to achieve as soon as possible. It became clear that there are things I won’t understand right away regarding data analytics. However, having that perseverance allows me to not become discouraged and leads to a version of myself that is always determined to progress. Resourcefulness is another skill that has carried over. I had been coming from work experiences where new problems or concerns would occur daily, and often I had to think of solutions without a structured guideline of what to do. With Year Up we learn multiple computer programs such as Excel, PowerPoint, Access, that can be used in many different ways. There are times where I have to use trial and error methods to achieve the goals I want from these programs. There are also times where I have to ask a teacher or classmate on things I can’t figure out. Using every outlet and avenue at my disposal is my way to best understand new material. My goal is to work towards becoming a data analyst and build a career from it. This is a new opportunity that I have been working hard to achieve. I am proactive about completing my work, ask questions to gain clarification, and learn when and where I can be most effective in group work. These characteristics will allow me to thrive not just with my courses, but also with any future team that or company.
