The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust includes major teaching hospitals. A wide range of medical equipment is used for diagnosis, monitoring, therapy and technical work throughout its wards, theatres, and clinical departments. The Clinical Engineering Department provides technical support for equipment throughout the Trust. As a clinical engineer, my key duties and responsibilities are listed below-• Communicate with medical, nursing, laboratory and technical staff regarding the safe use and operation of equipment.• Receive and respond to requests from medical device users for equipment repair and information.• Communicate with other Trusts and external health organisations with which we have contracted maintenance.• Communicate with external manufacturers regarding equipment issues such as ordering spare parts, service kits, repair problems etc.• Receive and inspect new medical equipment items, investigate them critically and ensure their proper functioning before installation.• Carry out repairs on common types of medical devices under supervision.• Carry out planned preventive maintenance and servicing of equipment.• Plan and organise, in collaboration with the users, access time to complete all work within designated time scales.• Carry out electrical safety and calibration checks as appropriate by the relevant codes and in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.• Ensure that all working procedures under the quality system are followed.• Enhance own performance through continuously developing own knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the current and future requirements of the job and respond to the learning needs of the Trust.• Regularly review own practices and make changes by current and best practices, make suggestions for improved practice and identify where other activities affect own practice• Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
