I currently work in conjunction with Birmingham Children’s Trust in the Youth Offending Service as an Education Specialist in which I mentor young offenders that are not in education, employment, or training to support them with finding a suitable educational placement. My role involves working one-on-one with vulnerable young people to motivate them to get back into school after many have faced adversities there when mainstream placements have not been able to meet their needs (such as SEN, SEMH, EAL) which involves liaising with the local authority, SENAR, independents special schools/colleges, admissions, and Birmingham Children’s Trust more widely to provide specialist provision and support for these young people. I develop meaningful relationships with my mentees, which often involves providing wider family and emotional support, as well as supporting them through tutoring to ensure that they are prepared and eased into reentering the school setting.

City Year UK are a charity that aim to tackle education inequality through providing schools with extra support through the means of a team of volunteer mentors placed in the school to work directly with children on a one-on-one basis to give them the extra support they need to progress. My responsibilities include assisting with the supervision of the volunteer mentors through monitoring achievements by recording their weekly activities, be the supporting liaison for day-to-day matters between the team and the school point of contact, arrange and encourage my team to take up opportunities for personal development, but most importantly to serve as an effective role model to volunteers and support in daily activities.

Parliamentors is a UN award-winning leadership programme that collaborates under their common goal of completing a social action project within their local community. My team and I have been working on a project to make politics more inclusive to young people, delivering virtual workshops for schools that have generated involvement of pupils in social issues such as identifying bias within the media. We have been delivering the project under persistent changes with the COVID-19 restrictions but have not let this stop us in making a difference to our community.

I have completed a twelve-week online virtual learning and mentoring programme that will equip me with skills in data analysis, marketing, finance, team work, adaptability, innovation, and diversity. I have applied my newfound knowledge and skills to business scenarios, using excel to visualise data in effective and innovative ways. The mentoring aided me in understanding professional working environments and ensure I have what it takes to be a successful candidate in future opportunities.

I began working at a new restaurant during the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, which put major pressures to hospitality staff all over the country. The discount was invaluable in bringing in customers but came with heavily busy shifts meaning one had to be adaptable and fast paced. I rose to the challenge of working in a busy environment whilst having to learn the dynamics of a new restaurant and delivered the same high-quality services I am used to providing.

Through undertaking courses to learn about health and safety regulations surrounding food storage, I oversaw the food section and ensured it was all in-date and appropriately displayed on the shop floor. I took stock take and damaged goods and followed the necessary protocol for effective service. I gained customer service skills in a new industry and developed skills on manual and self-service tills.

With the overall aims of expanding my work experience into other sectors and funding my upcoming study abroad semester, I sought out a short-term contract with a local advertising agency that exposed me to a new working environment that put my adaptability skills to the test. During my short time with the company, I successfully tagged, stored and reorganized their filing system, boosted sales through direct calls and emails to previous clients with a conversion rate of around 20% and dispersed incoming mail to correct recipients throughout the office. The job boosted my sales techniques to another industry and tested my ability to interact with customers.

Many of my colleagues were largely untrained as it was their first job and as I had near two years of experience in the industry, I committed myself to training them throughout the shift as the managerial staff were busy. As a job, this gave me a first taste into what it takes to lead a team to success and explore my own abilities in doing so.

In one initiative I was a part of, I took it upon myself to learn and create new concoctions of existing items into new designs in order rise sales of existing items where they had been lacking. I am constantly looking at new ways to advanceproductivity and did this consistently throughout my time here and received praise from management, of whom had me work at several branches as he trusted me as a worker and had faith that I would adapt quickly to a new team to work as well with them as I did in my home branch.
