About Global Cleantech Innovation Programme For Sme'S In India

The MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) sector plays a vital role in the Indian economy. It contributes around 45% of manufacturing output, 40% of exports, and employs more than 69 million people. Most of the small scale units are concentrated in around 400 geographical clusters across the country. Out of these, there are a large number of energy-intensive MSME clusters in the manufacturing sector (around 178 cluster manufacturing about 15 product categories), which require urgent energy efficiency measures for economic and environmental sustainability. Realizing the importance of this segment of industry, the NAPCC and the recent five year plans of the Indian Government, through MSME, BEE and DIPP has launched programmes / schemes to promote energy efficiency improvement among MSMEs.Given this scenario, investing in low carbon technologies is seen as a solution that can significantly reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in India’s industrial sector, while enabling the Indian economy to alleviate energy poverty and maintain steady growth.A project has been launched by the Ministry of MSME in partnership with UNIDO and GEF for promoting innovations in clean technology in the Indian SMEs. The project was launched on 3rd May, 2013. FICCI has been identified as the national implementing partner along with other bodies and industry associations fulfilling the vision of all SMEs in India to be energy efficient and adoption of clean technology by 2025. The idea is to promote sustainable development and reduce carbon footprint of the Indian SMEs by introduction of new technologies and innovations.Project Cleantech aims to support clean technology innovators and entrepreneurs in India, and build the national capacity for clean energy technologies. To begin with, the Cleantech Project will focus on linking innovators to investors in Four Key areas:• Energy Efficiency• Waste to Energy• Renewable Energy• Water Efficiency
