Interpretation Manager

London, United Kingdom

As Interpretation Manager at The British Museum, I managed a team of Interpretation Officers developing interpretation for all temporary exhibition and permanent gallery projects at across the Museum. We acted as audience advocates, leading on visitor research, and also working on international and national exhibitions for The British Museum. As well as allocating and overseeing the work of the team, I managed my own projects. I saw projects through from concept to installation, always working on several projects at a time. The British Museum is a dynamic environment and my role involved collaborating with a wide range of colleagues across the museum – from curators to exhibition designers, marketing managers and heads of department. Alongside developing interpretation plans and exhibition content, I was responsible for procuring and contracting freelance specialists, managing budgets, project reporting and evaluation. Among many other projects, I was the interpretation and visitor research lead for the major exhibitions 'Vikings: Life and Legend' (March to October 2014) and 'Ming: 50 years that changed China' (September 2014 to January 2015). Visitor research is an important part of the Interpretation team's role at the British Museum and I collaborated with external market research consultants and internal colleagues to develop audience research projects. The findings from these reports directly informed the interpretation and marketing produced for public displays at the museum. I also managed the team's student placement scheme, working closely with universities and the museum's volunteers team to match students with the right projects, delegate their day-to-day care to a member of my team (an important personal development skill), and monitor their placements.
