Billy BirssJourneyman ElectricianNew London, TX 75682Peepdisshiznit@aol.com+1 903 392 4256Approximately 15 years ago in 2007 I was a 24 year old Know-It-All-Young-Buck living in Henderson, Tx in a kitchenette with my Fiancé, our two children(a 5 year old boy and an infant baby girl)and for some reason a couple of cats that I had no say so over. The neighborhood we lived in was not a safe one by any means; turned out our Landlords/Neighbors were tweaked-out meth-heads with a penchant for the unexpected and I truly despised working nights while my family was at home to fend for themselves. I worked 10pm-6am as a 3rd Shift Cashier for Cefco because it was the only employment I could find at the time and I worked every hour I could to support my family as best I knew how. Routine being what it was,every shift of every night was always the same and when the mornings came around for everyone’s day to get started,my regular customers would come trickling in. Through the awesomeness of coffee and donuts, I had come to know all of the regulars that came in every morning but nothing more than the usual chit-chat and the casual exchange of pleasantries, just part of the job. The last morning I worked at Cefco, my regulars were trickling in like usual but one in particular seemed rather perturbed, seemed like he had an issue with needing more help at work. One helper quit and another one got fired so he was way more stressed than I’ve ever seen him before so, in an effort to make him laugh, I jokingly told him that I’d come help him as soon as I was done with my shift. He didn’t laugh, instead he took me seriously and introduced himself as Jerry Barker, Master Electrician/Owner of Electro-Mec in Henderson, Tx and he hired me, a Know-It-All-Young-Buck, on the spot. What I said was supposed to be just a joke,not an attempt to get hired on but his decision that morning marked the start of my career in a field I knew nothing about. I didn’t think to ask him back then because it was all so surreal to me but I always wanted to know if he knew what I said was meant as a joke and/or why he did what he did that morning. Unfortunately I’ll never know because I didn’t ask him before he passed away on February 29,2016. Jerry Barker is the one that took a chance on a Cashier that liked to tell jokes and is the reason I haven’t done anything else since. I’m here because I am once again doing everything I can to support my family and I’ll do everything I can to live up to the golden standard that Jerry Barker represented. So in that spirit I ask of you, “Need any help?”.
