Highlights include reducing external legal spend for the business to ~$0 for the first 6 months, negotiating the end to a long standing litigation and successful negotiation with a core digital supplier threatening to wilfully default.

Secondment to the Z legal team to lead Z’s response to regulatory consultation on legislation that would shape the future of the fuel industry. These legislative developments followed the Commerce Commission's market study into retail fuel in 2019.

In this role I was the legal adviser to Trade Me's Property, Marketplace, Payments and Advertising verticals. Highlights included a material cross-vertical project to design and implement a data governance framework to manage data and privacy risk across Trade Me's complex and segmented business and advising Trade Me on its acquisition of a strategic equity stake in media buying and advertising company AdTorque Edge (NZ). Other work included, submissions on the Open Banking API framework and MBIE's review of the Copy Right Act and s36 of the Commerce Act.

In this role I worked closely with the Todd Corporation downstream energy businesses (Nova Energy and Todd Generation) and the group strategy and planning team. The downstream energy work included advising the divisional CEO and senior leadership team on commercial and legal negotiations, growth projects and compliance across all functions. The group strategy and planning work included advising on financing, corporate structure, development, strategic relationships and M&A. Highlights include:- co-leading legal advice on Nova’s successful sale of the LPG business to Genesis in 2017 (~$190M)- leading legal advice for the Junction Road Power Plant development in 2018, including engineer to contract and lender’s engineer negotiations; and negotiation and drafting of FIDIC Engineer Procure Construct Contract and turbine procurement and 15yr maintenance contracts (+$90M)- advising on complex refinancing and restructuring to support the Junction Road Power Plant development and other core strategic investment in 2018 (~$200M)- lead legal advisor on property and consenting arrangements for Junction Road and a larger generation project in the Waikato, including: landowner arrangements such as consents, sale and lease back and land acquisitions and engaging external counsel and experts to appear at a successful resource consent hearing in 2018- providing advice on the emergency provisions of the RMA and leading commercial negotiations for a civil construction project to remediate a hydrodam in 2016 (~$5M)- advising on a nationwide project to ensure a range of infrastructure sites comply with local planning, RMA and HAZNO requirements- advising on resource consent issues for Kaipara harbour tidal projectRecognition: In-House Legal Team Finalist (In-House Legal Awards, 2016); Young In-House Lawyer of the Year Nominee (In-House Legal Awards, 2017); and Nova Energy Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sales and Marketing (2017).
