Lund, Sweden

As a research assistant at LUCSUS (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies), I have been working on three different research projects.1. Effects of the 2018 drought on farmers in southern Sweden.During my first few months, I helped out with creating, spreading and analyzing online surveys to farmers in Skåne about the effects the dry summer of 2018 had had on them and their business.2. InnoForESt During most of my time at LUCSUS, I worked for the Innoforest project (https://innoforest.eu/), a European research project on innovations related to the supply and financing of forest ecosystem services. Within the Swedish Innovation Region, we worked closely together with Universeum (a science centre in Gothenburg) in developing a stakeholder-driven school project on forests and climate. Furthermore, I carried out a study on the potentials and barriers to continuous cover forestry (CCF) in Sweden. 3. Non-economic loss and damage from climate changeDuring my last months at LUCSUS, I worked within the DICE research project (https://www.lucsus.lu.se/dice) on a literature review mapping non-economic loss and damage from climate extremes.

Stellenbosch, South-Africa

Searching for a way to get a feel for nature conservation and sustainable agriculture outside of Europe, I ended up doing an internship in the Western Cape region, South-Africa. My research project is about small-scale honeybush tea production (both cultivation and harvesting from the wild) in the village of Genadendal, which is one of the poorest villages in the region. I am focussing especially on the youth (aged 18-35) in this village. Through interviews, I am trying to get grip on the barriers that they experience for getting engaged in agriculture in general and honeybush production more specifically.

In order to put my knowledge into practice, I am currently engaged in an internship at the Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency. My task is to have a critical look at the Environmental Data Compendium and the way in which the meaning, relevance and reliability of the biodiversity indicators on this website are communicated.

The mission of the working group is to come up with a new educational approach through which the university can cope with the rapidly growing student numbers whilst maintaining (or enhancing) its quality of education. The key principles we came up with are 1) the student as an active participant, 2) differentiation in learning styles, 3) high-quality feedback and 4) learning in communities.
