I believe in more than just writing lines of code. My IT experience has shown me that machines aren't just soul-less pieces of metal and wires. Every algorithm, every interface, and every application has been built by someone behind the screen, for someone behind the screen. Like most in my generation, my introduction to software was video games. When I was young and my brother and I would be stuck on long road-trips with my family, I would tell stories like a text based adventure game, letting my brother choose the options and progress. The very first thing I made when I decided I wanted to learn programming was a very basic text based adventure game in Python called the "Dragon's Lair". I wouldn't say the writing in that game was as impressive as Shakespeare, but at least I can code when he can't. My first professional challenge that I've faced in software was a UI overhaul of my workplace's employee website. Having never known any web design before, I ventured deep into the basics of full-stack web development. I could sit here and tell you all about how I learned HTML/CSS to create more modern UI that was mobile friendly, how I learned Javascript and JQuery to update our website's deprecated web framework, or how I played around with SQL databases to make sure our timecards were being saved on our servers properly.However, I learned much from that experience that I wouldn't be able to have learned from making my own personal project. How to properly respond to user feedback, and how to work in a team environment. This website was a tool that our entire workplace would be using, so it was important that as we made our changes we made sure to ask our coworkers whether or not what we were making was more intuitive than the old website, or were just extra features that bloated up the page. Outside of my IT work and coding on my laptop, you might find me writing comedy sketches and reading science fiction literature.
