Senegal, Guinea-Bissau And Sudbury

Worked as a research assistant for Dr. Émilie Pinard to study the know-how and practical knowledge related to vernacular construction in West Africa and their current and potential contribution to contemporary architectural practice and research. Travelled to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau for a month to document projects. Additionally, I worked full-time (summer 2019) in the creation of website content to present information gathered through this research. Worked with a high degree of autonomy in research collection and presentation.

Worked as a co-op student on several mass timber design projects. The primary project I was involved with was a community centre in a remote Swedish town in the construction document phase. Through this co-op position I acquired a strong understanding of mass timber design principles. Since the process necessitated close collaboration with an engineering team and a small local architecture firm, I gained familiarity with the collaborative process involved in the delivery of a successful project.

Worked in a small architecture firm that specializes in renovations and adaptive reuse. Personal responsibilities included a range of activities from completing on-site measurements of existing buildings, as-found drawings and drawing up building details.

Hands-on construction work on an adaptive reuse project converting an existing industrial building into a cafe with a new design by Lara McKendrick Architecture. My contributions involved working with the site supervisor to install doors, stairs, assist a metal stud framing crew and level a concrete floor.

Worked as a construction labourer building high quality custom stonework. Gained familiarity with stonework construction (patios, outdoor stairs, retaining walls, raised garden beds) and acquired abilities in stone craftsmanship. Rehired the following year.
