About Isabel Mckay
Linguistics is an unusual scientific field because the subject investigation is a set of knowledge - knowledge that been lodged in our minds for so long that each of us cannot really remember a time before we can speak and understand. In order to study the phenomenon that is "human language" one must be able to think metacognitively about a skill which is intuitive - to break down thoughtless knowledge into a thoughtful and organized models.It took me a long time to settle on becoming a linguist. At various phases of my life I've wanted to be a mammologist, an archaeologist, a musician, an ornithologist, a writer, and even a parasitologist. In the end, though, I was drawn to linguistics because in addition to finding it fascinating, I found that it suited me and the way that I think extremely well.My dissertation work focuses on the meaning and structure of verbs, and how different sorts of verbs combine with their objects to describe different types of events. I investigate this by examining verbal structures in languages from around the world, but is specifically a case study of Montana Salish, the dialect of the Kalispel language group which is primarily spoken on the Flathead reservation in northwestern Montana.In addition to this theoretical work on the logic of language, I also study the social aspects of language. I am particularly interested in how we adapt our intuitive skill with spoken language to communicate through text. I've published work on how we use written expressions like "lol" to fill some of the communicative functions of laughter when laughter itself cannot be heard or seen, and I've also worked on projects investigating the ways we use punctuation to resolve a wide variety of ambiguities usually resolved through spoken inflection or other audiovisual signals.I am also a particularly passionate teacher. Since 2014 I've taught nine different linguistics courses at the university level, both online and in person, and served seven times as a solo instructor. I also run a linguistics YouTube channel where I post lessons on various linguistics topics.Though I've settled in on being a linguist, I've still continued to follow my other passions as well. I can sometimes be found wandering off the trail to stare at an interesting beetle, or researching coffee preparation techniques from the 1840s to enrich the setting of my latest novel, or tapdancing in my neighborhood production of "Singin' in the Rain."Research Languages: English, Italian, Interior Salish, Warlpiri, Latin, Old English, Persian, Chinyika, Hebrew, Sorani Kurdish
