As one of two managers of the environmental operations at the building central to UVM's campus, I designed ecologically-focused projects and events to engage and educate the greater UVM community. This work involved collaboration and communication between the Residential Life Eco-Reps, planning and hosting educational events to celebrate environmental topics, coordinating university-wide events for Earth Week between multiple stakeholders, communicating between other Davis Center Operations staff to ensure sustainable practices, and collaborating with the external vendor Intervale Food Hub to distribute weekly CSA shares. A noteworthy event I designed and executed was a talk on urban agriculture and social justice by James Beard Leadership Award-winning Karen Washington. For this event, I fund raised to cover all expenses, organized the participation of student organizations, negotiated with Ben and Jerry's to get free ice cream, and marketed the event, bringing in over 150 students, professors and individuals to the talk.

This position is only open to full-time employees, but in the event of shifting management I was offered the rare opportunity to run the Eco-Reps program based on my understanding of the program, organizational skills, strong work ethic, and leadership. The Eco-Rep program works to educate and engage the whole of UVM's community on sustainability initiatives offered by the University. This is the only program that thoroughly and effectively monitors the progress of UVM's sustainability initiatives. My job duties included:- Overseeing Eco-Rep employees (15-20 students) - Waste & sustainability audits throughout the campus - Individual campus events - Large-scale events - Payroll, hours and allocation of time- Leading the hiring & training process for incoming employees - Running two weekly team & managerial meetings to review goals, events, large-scale projects, etc. - Helped teams troubleshoot road-blocks in events/activities - one on one's with team members in need of additional support - Encouraged creativity to increase collaboration between Eco-Reps and other parties and to increase turn-out of events- Managing and budgeting of current/new supplies- Establishing and maintaining connections with other campus groups & departments- Created & encouraged use of Eco-Rep presence on social media- Onboarding of the new Eco-Rep Coordinator This role helped me develop effective interpersonal communication, public speaking, leadership, delegative and interdisciplinary communication skills.

The goal of my team's project was to examine residential perceptions of green stormwater infrastructure in Vermont, identify potential attributing factors and correlate perception with green stormwater infrastructure implementation. I helped to input and analyze the data for state-wide residential survey results on green stormwater infrastructure. My work focused on identifying stormwater-impaired regions and bodies of water resulting from poor infrastructural designs such as combined sewer overflows. Impaired water bodies as determined by the VT-DEC, combined sewer overflow events and residential respondents were recorded in ArcGIS maps. Combined sewer overflow event records were obtained online and through communication with municipality public offices.

As part of my job, I worked on three campaigns in the framework of data and analysis: water, energy and the 5 R's (reduce, reuse, repair, repurpose, recycle). For the water campaign, I created and distributed a university-wide survey to identify reusable water bottle usage, knowledge on the impact of throwaway water bottles and personal behavioral impact. By working with people who pioneered the water bottle ban and the experts who conducted research on the ban's effects, I gained insight into conducting effective surveys, access to distribution resources, and continued challenges faced by the movement's pioneers and advocates. Apart of data management, I ran a small team of students on one of the university's residential campuses, advocating for our current campaigns and promoting UVM's green initiatives. I learned how to balance being a peer with the image of being a boss, and giving them freedom while staying focused on the campaign and tasks at hand.

As the Greening of Aiken Intern, my job required me to perform an array of different tasks in support of my mentor. I would often help conduct research on topics such as green roof effectiveness and scope, or perform operational tasks around the Aiken Center such as calibrating and fixing the green roof water collection system. I supported the Aiken Center's green roof assessments through water quality tests on contaminants relative to Vermont water quality using the latchet and ICP. My consistent duties included watering the greenhouse, taking out the compost, conducting independent research as part of my internship and supporting climate change research by coring trees in forests across Vermont.

In my first position as Eco-Rep, I worked within a team to educate others on current initiatives. My team would create educational materials such as posters, signage and events for the student body to engage with. Being at the forefront and interacting directly with the student body improved my public speaking and communication skills, and ability to engage with those who may not be interested in our message. This position also required creativity, attention to detail and cultivation of aesthetics, all the while working within a non-existent budget.

My official title was restaurant receptionist, which entailed taking phone and online orders for pick-up and delivery, learning and using the POS system, coordinating the flow of orders, some food preparation, packaging the food and offering a warm welcome and positive interactions with new and old customers. As part of the job, I also helped to arrange reservations, greet and seat guests, bring drinks and bus tables, and clean up the kitchen area. I was briefly employed as a waitress, which was a more hands-on situation of dealing directly with customers and further developing my communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

From January to the week of Spring Break (in March), my small team worked on fundraising through cultivation and distribution of grant proposals. This proposal was given to University of Vermont departments and downtown stores and organizations. This fundraising went towards our food, transportation (flights and vehicles) and the full cost of the solar panels, totaling to about $8,500.During Spring Break, we learned about GRID Alternatives and learned to install solar panels. Five days worth of work allowed us to install photovoltaics on two separate households of low-income families.
