Isabella Aung is the Head of Diploma of the Comparative Politics Diploma Program (CPDP) at Spring University Myanmar (SUM), an online institution providing access to higher education for refugee and IDP youths in and from Myanmar whose university education is disrupted by war and political violence. She is also a political scientist researching women’s digital activism in the ongoing anti-authoritarian movement in Myanmar.Isabella has been a UBC Myanmar Initiative Fellow since 2021. She was recognized as an emerging scholar by le Réseau d’analyse stratégique/the Network for Strategic Analysis (RAS-NSA). She was a Civil War Paths fellow (2023-2024) at the University of York and an inaugural Public Scholarship Fellow (2023-2024) at Queen's University. She is now a research fellow affiliated with the Myanmar Policy and Community Knowledge (MyPACK) Hub at the University of Toronto.Decolonizing academia and incorporating the lived experiences of women of color into academic discourse are her ultimate goals as a researcher. Her research interests include Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), minority women's political activism and representation, migrant rights, and digital authoritarianism. In terms of methodology, she is trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her regional expertise is in Canada and Myanmar.
