After a competitive application process, I was selected through the Dow Jones News Fund program to become a multiplatform editing intern at the Los Angeles Times for the summer of 2018. Following 10 days of training at the University of Texas at Austin, I began at The Times in June. As a member of the metro copy desk, I edited articles for online and print, keeping in mind AP style, in-house style, accuracy, grammar and legality; wrote headlines for online utilizing the best SEO practices; crafted headlines, subheads and jumps for the print paper; edited copy on videos and photo galleries; wrote cutlines for photos; and more.

Orlando, Florida Area

As part of the Orlando Sentinel's digital team, I helped run the website's home page, which receives more than 50 million page views a month. I utilized news judgement skills to decide what should be on the home page, when to send alerts and help manage a social media audience of about 470,000 people. In addition, I wrote breaking news, such as crime, traffic and weather stories. I also helped manage the home page and live blog during Hurricane Irma, which was the third-highest day in Sentinel history for page views, with more than 7.6 million views.

Transfer and Transition Services is UCF's advising office specifically for students who transfer from other institutions. As the senior student assistant, I was responsible for training and helping the three student assistants who work in the office. I answered students' advising questions over phone and email. I also helped plan and host events for transfer students, such as SEE UCF and orientations for new UCF students. In addition, I completed clerical duties, like appointment scheduling, copying and maintaining the office.

I edited roughly 20 stories per week for grammar, AP style, accuracy and more. I also worked personally with writers to develop and improve their stories. I worked with the editor in chief to manage a team of about 40 reporters and coordinate coverage of breaking news, features and more.

The Central Florida Focus is UCF's newest student-run media outlet dedicated to objectivity and keeping students informed. As the assistant news editor, I cover events, breaking news, features and more. I also generate story ideas and produce original writing and photography. I assign stories to contributing writers, help create pitch lists and follow up to ensure deadlines are met. In addition, I edit writers' articles for AP Style, accuracy, grammar, punctuation and more.
