Fulbright English Teaching Assistant

Current

South Korea

I teach English to all 3 grades at Seonju Middle School in Gumi, South Korea. I create materials for and teach 22 classes a week and hold a 2 hour afterschool conversation class with the students. I collaborate with 4 different co-teachers to cover the listening and speaking sections of the textbooks and cover cultural lessons, too. I ensure the lessons are suited for each students' level which can vary from class to class within the same grade. I also give and grade the speaking tests at my school and review the written exams for any typos/unnatural language.

Jan 2023 - Present

Special Education Paraprofessional

I worked at four different elementary schools, including two Title 1 schools, in the Volusia County area in the Speech and Langauge Department to help with Exceptional Student Education (ESE) in PK - 5th grade. I worked with Speech and Langauge Pathologists (SLPs) to transport the students to and from their sessions, covered groups for the SLPs, and helped push into mild/moderate and multi-VE classrooms. These classrooms had nonverbal students, students with devices, and students working on pragmatic language.I also helped with clerical work. I kept Individual Education Plans (IEPs) up to date in the student folders and school folders, processed monitoring forms, shredded paperwork, and helped make session materials. I made a caseload spreadsheet for all the students receiving services at the various schools and ensured it stayed up-to-date following IEP meetings.

Server

Gainesville, Florida, United States

I completed side-work while managing 3-5 tables, typically including a party of 8 or more. The side work usually included making sauces, chopping and restocking garnishes, and polishing androlling silverwear. I set up and worked several catering events at the restuarant and off-site locations. I memorized specials and seasonal menu items in addition to the standard menu. I worked as an opener and a closer for both brunch and dinner.

Co Teacher

To earn my TESL certificate, I completed an internship during the Fall 2021 semester in which I co-taught advanced-level English to international visiting scholars at UF. The scholars were from China, Costa Rica, Germany, and Pakistan. In other TESL courses, I learned how to plan lessons, yet this internship was the first opportunity I had to design an entire course. This course was centered around food culture in America because me and my co-teacher, Sarah, are both servers at local restaurants in Gainesville.Forming this sense of community showed me the wonderful, humanistic aspect of education and reaffirmed my passion for teaching. The internship itself reaffirmed this too. I would go home and tell my friends and family about my lessons. I loved talking about my students and seeing them use the phrases we taught them. The first lesson we had was about ways to say you like and do not like certain foods. After that lesson, one student came back and said he had lunch with some of his coworkers and used the phrase ‘not my cup of tea’ and ‘did not hit the spot’. It was so rewarding to hear that he was using what we taught him in his everyday life. Moreover, as the course was ending many of the students still wanted me and Sarah as their teachers. Teaching a class on my own and creating all the materials showed me that I can be an instructor and boosted my confidence as a teacher. I will take the experiences I learned in this internship and apply them to other teaching jobs, such as my ETA position in Korea through Fulbright.

Content Tutor

I worked for the University Athletic Association (UAA) as a content tutor for student-athletes here at UF. I mainly tutored students in PSY2012 General Psychology and a few students in various biology courses. All the student-athletes I tutored were hard-working, intelligent, and overall lovely individuals. For my sessions, I started with questions the tutees had about work or concepts. Then we either completed assignments together or went through material I prepared beforehand. I then documented what we accomplished to keep their academic advisors and strategy tutors updated.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant

All the TAs and the professor attended weekly meetings to create the rubric for each week's homework and to discuss how all the students were doing in the course. During exam weeks, Dr. Angerhofer used our weekly meeting to have the TAs test the exam before the students took them. We discussed the difficulty of the questions and if there would be enough time to complete all the questions within one period. However, only graduate TAs were required to proctor and grade the exams. We also graded homework and held office hours twice a week. I really enjoyed having office hours and each week was something new. Sometimes I would have many students coming to ask questions about a difficult homework problem and other days no one would show up. Students sometimes showed up with questions about the university and life, as opposed to homework. The mentorship aspect of TAing was quite rewarding. All the students in the class were freshmen and attending their first semester of college. Only the year before, I was doing the same thing. Therefore, with a year of experience under my belt, I loved sharing my experiences, mistakes, and triumphs to help the new students. Some questions were simple - such as my favorite restaurants around town - and others were more daunting. I changed my major many times at UF thus I know the emotions that come along with such a big decision. One student, in particular, was on the pre-med track but also loved theater. She wanted to double major but worried she was spreading herself thin. We talked multiple times during my office hours about it and I felt honored to help her in her journey. Again, the human connections made through teaching solidify my passion for the field.
