Itu completed his Bachelor's degree in architecture from the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi in 1984, then decided to pursue design in an interdisciplinary way, eventually concentrating on graphic design, which he came to via a long-standing fascination with lettering and typography. His work cuts across media.In 1996 he founded a graphic design studio which he runs along with his partner Lisa Rath. ICD (Itu Chaudhuri Design) helps businesses through design consulting and strategy, and has a large body of work in branding, packaging, communication and UI/UX.Itu does consulting work for business on their long term brand journeys, The involvement is enterprise wide, steering the effort to propel businesses through design. It cuts across disciplines, from marketing to operations. Under Itu and Lisa’s guidance ICD’s ‘Brand Stewardship’ relationships have accelerated brands from consumer products to tech services. Itu has led international design juries like D&AD, featured in international and national publications including Platform, World Graphic Design, and Smart CEO.Called “one of India’s principal design intellectuals” by noted (historian Mukul Kesavan), Itu Chaudhuri regularly writes and speaks on design. He has been a speaker at major forums and institutions like Kyoorius Design Yatra (2006), at Nasscom, IIT Guwahati, IIT Powai, Symbiosis, or at companies like Adobe. He delivered the H.Y. Sharada Prasad Memorial 2018, and Uncertain Arc, a first of its kind lecture on India’s design history, for India International Centre’s history series of talks. Itu has also been visiting faculty at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, consulted on curriculum development with UCLA Arts, Los Angeles.Itu’s column ‘Deep Design’ (Business Standard, 2016–2020) explored culture, business and life through a design lens. He has authored pieces for The Platform Magazine, Outlook Traveller, India Today, Open Magazine, Paper Planes. Itu is also a fiction writer and has contributed short stories to Civil Lines 6, an anthology of new writing in fiction from India, (HarperCollins, 2012).
