Embrasure is an open-source, self-hosted secrets manager for small teams that securely stores and injects secrets for Node.js applications.•Prototyped and built Embrasure using Node.js and Amazon Web Services (RDS for PostgreSQL, API Gateway, Lambda, IAM)•Used AWS RDS, Lamdas, and the serverless framework to implement encryption-at-rest and encryption-in-transit for secure secret storage and secret injection.•Implemented PostgreSQL database authentication using dynamically generated AWS IAM auth tokens, AWS IAM policies, and database-level permissions.•Configured a CLI to communicate with a RESTful API server with commands to manage secrets and users.•Engineered middleware to process requests, verify authenticity and authorization through AWS IAM, create audit logs of all requests, and connect to a secure PostgreSQL database.•Collaborated daily with a remote team of engineers using an agile workflow.•Authored an in-depth technical case study that outlined the process, research, architecture, and tradeoffs of Embrasure. https://embrasure-secrets.github.io/
