I am currently contracted at HMRC until April 2025, where I'm a member of one of the Platforms teams supporting various big data systems running in AWS. I'm also embedded within an Agile team in the same overall programme.Technologies that I work with in my day-to-day include Python, Terraform, Ansible, Vault, Elasticsearch, Kibana, Docker, GitlabCI, Jenkins, Hadoop/HDFS, Hive, Yarn, Spark, MySQL, Telegraf and Grafana.I also have over 20 years of commercial experience as a senior/lead developer, so I can take on other projects through the business which I run with my wife. We can cover pretty much anything relating to:Python (Django, Flask, NumPy, Pandas)OpenAI APIs (custom ChatGPT-like applications)JavaScript (Node.js, React, Next.js)Google AnalyticsPHP (Laravel, Symfony)Test automationI've done a lot of work with Java, C and Ruby over the years too, and I'm a shell scripter extraordinaire. Absolute rubbish at PowerPoint, though.

Technical Operations ConsultantDistributed Intelligence Systems Ltd Jun 2002 - Dec 2007Sophia Antipolis, France; Veghel, NetherlandsThe company relocated me to France when I started this job. After a few weeks I was sent to a client in the Netherlands to help out on a "medium size project" that I was still working on 5 years later when I left! Talk about a long commute. The work was mainly Windows-based, supporting the software written by the core development team in France and writing custom tools for the client using Visual C#. I also introduced Linux (Knoppix) into the workflow, to improve the process of setting up a new store machine.

Applications DeveloperPlusnet Nov 2000 - Jan 2002Sheffield, United KingdomFirst professional experience with PHP. We were initially writing a browser-based office suite, probably one of the earliest commercial uses of XML-RPC. However, browser technology wasn't really up to it in those days, and we ended up being absorbed into our sister company Plusnet, where I worked on the internal ERP system ("Workplace", eventually rebranded and bought by British Telecom I believe). -

Game TesterPsygnosis 1992 - 2000Liverpool, United KingdomThanks mainly to nepotism I landed a part-time job in my school/uni holidays testing games on the Amiga, PC and PlayStation 1 from the age of 13 until I was 21.I spent an entire summer doing the level conversion for the Atari Lynx version of Lemmings, someone gave me a debugger and a level designer and left me to it! Another time I had to courier a development version of a game from Liverpool to San Francisco Airport, then basically turn around and come back again. But it was mainly games testing, and answering the Psygnosis helpline. This remains the most enjoyable job I've ever had, apart from ${current_role}.
